Hi Mary, I am sorry but we don't have Scottish records on the site at the moment. Have you tried 'search trees' though? If you enter the name of your relative you'll be able to see if we have any matches for you and these will include matches for Scotland. It might be better if you just enter the name rather than add a location as members do add locations in different ways. For example, someone might just add Scotland, whereas someone else might simply add Edinburgh.

My understanding has always been that it is the Scottish government office that basically controls the fact that information can only be seen in full on Scotland's People ............... and probably also controls how many other sites (and which sites) may carry bits and pieces.

ancestry has the record pages for all the censuses, but you cannot see the images themselves due to that control. This is what they say on their site to explain why ................

"Unfortunately, we are unable to display the accompanying images of this census at present, despite extensive negotiation with the General Register Office for Scotland. Permission from them has not, as yet, been forthcoming. For this reason, and to enable you to continue with your family history research, Ancestry has heavily transcribed the Scottish Census records to ensure you have access to all key areas of information contained within this collection."

If GR starts carrying all the same records as findmypast, one does have to ask what is the difference between the sites ....................... and therefore how soon would be before GR is lost by being absorbed into FMP?

To me, this site has always been one of the easiest places to start and maintain your tree, for free ............. and a place where the Community Boards provide invaluable help for a small fee.

That is what we are beginning to lose ....... the trees are no longer as easy to maintain (according to complaints from many people), and the Community Boards have lost many of the very experienced helpers over the last year due to all the problems.
