That's unusual Quinsgran! But it would make it easier to research I expect.

Yes I was surprised when I got my grandfather birth cert Its a Yorkshire name
She was Margaret born 1859 living with her grandparents in 1861 who claimed to be her parents till I got her birth cert and found her mother was Elizabeth and working away in 1861 No fathers name of course

Elizabeth married and Margaret was with her as daughter on the next census

A similar situation with my 2 & 3 x Great Grandmothers. My 2x Great Grandmother appears to have had 2 illegitimate children. The daughter was aged 8 living with my 3x Great Grandmother as her daughter. At 18 she was registered with her mother on the Census with her Stepfather's surname, as was her brother (my G. Grandfather)

Yes I read something about that especially in some cultures.

My mother's mother's family were from Kent. Illegitimacy seemed rife there.

Yes I had a shock myself, when I found out that the Gran who raised me (pity she was old and should never have been put in that position) and gave me a hard time when I was growing up, was heavily pregnant when she married my Grandfather. Sadly, the baby died shortly after birth. My Grandfather (her husband) was also born 4 months after his parents marriage. It was a hypocritical generation!

Graham

I had an odd one in my family where my ggg grandmother married three times and had children with husbands two and three. The daughters from marriage three are using husband ones surname on all the census records after dads death. The only husband ggg gran had no kids with all the while mum is still using husband threes surname. I have seen all the birth and marriage certs and can find no reason for it.

Very Odd Tawny!

APPS

I have a family (not direct but married in) that used 2 different surnames for generations! Some Census' they used APPS, then others- EMPETT. Married in both and baptised in both!
