Could someone please see if they can find anything on Ancestry about his service?

I also can't find him on the 1911 census but I suppose he could have been at sea as early as age 15. In 1911, Vida is in London and Ethel is in Lincolnshire. His mother is deceased, can't find his father.

The ship "Mongolia" was mined in 1917, and sunk off Bombay with the loss of 23 lives.

23.06.1917: Struck a mine laid by the German raider Wolf, 80km (50 miles)
south-west of Bombay, and sank in thirteen minutes. She was on
voyage from London to India, China and Australia with passengers
and mails. 3 passengers (2 Europeans, 1 Parsee), 3 engineers and
14 other crew died in the explosion. Efficient boat drill enabled all
the 450 or so survivors to leave the ship, although two crew were
drowned when landing from the boats, and another died later from
injuries sustained in the blast. Despite the monsoon the boats all
made the coast at or near Janjira, apart from one which landed at
Bombay.
