I am just revisiting this thread to thank the very kind people who spent their time and effort in helping me find information about Gustavus. You are all very much appreciated!
He certainly had an interesting family (!) and I will try and summarise that in the Remembrance book I am putting together. which I am now way behind with due to family circumstances.
I still have 2/3 names I am a bit stuck with so I am drawing a line under Gustavus and will post the others if I can't get any further with them.

To all who have posted since I last replied . I am so sorry not to have responded but I have been at the hospital with my father who has just passed away. So thank you all so very much for your time and effort and when things are sorted I will come back and look at your replies and respond.

And many other reports. In a couple of them he's listed as Hal Gustavus.

So he does seem to have been with his parents, at least from 1889 onwards.
1891 - Henry and son Harry are together (already posted), but no sign of Gustavus.

This might be Bertha in 1891, again claiming US birth (New Jersey) - but Gustavus isn't with her either:

Perhaps Gustavus was in Ireland in 1891 - maybe at school, or with Coyne relatives.
But where is he in 1901 and particularly 1911 after his marriage??


Re New Jersey - Bertha's brother Thomas and her sister Josephine both emigrated to the US, and lived in New Jersey

I know this is nothing to do with Gustavus, but I'm hooked!

Re the possible 1861 marriage -

I can't find a Phoebe Snider anywhere in 1861.
But there's this Phoebe (maybe nothing to do with the Coyne story):

Further Googling re Gardiner:

Gardiner Coyne , "celebrated Irish comedian and vocalist", was at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in 1864.
In 1873 he was at the Southminster Theatre of Varieties, Edinburgh.
In 1895, "Gardiner Coyne's Combination" was at the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall in Glasgow.

Phoebe must have acted, too. This 1868 report mentions "Mrs Gardiner Coyne":

"On Thursday. 2nd April, the performance will commence with the celebrated drama, in three acts, entitled The Pearl of Killarney [with] Wandering Davy [played by] Mr Gardiner Coyne in which he will sing "The Sprig of Shillelagh", and the celebrated song (written expressly for him) named "The dear little Shamrock"...To conclude on Thursday evening with the laughable Irish farce of 'Larry's Blunders', Larry Hoolaghan, with songs [by] Mr. Gardiner Coyne...Friday, 3rd April - Grand fashionable night! for the benefit of Mr Gardiner Coyne who will appear in three characters, with sings and dances; and on which occasion Mrs. Gardiner Coyne will appear for this night only as "Norah Herbert". The performances will commence with the delightful domestic drama, entitled 'The Irishman's Home or, The Stolen Sheep!"...after which, the serio-comic drama, entitled The Irish Engagement...To conclude on Friday evening with the laughable Irish farce of 'Born To Good Luck' Paudeen O'Rafferty (with songs) - Mr. Gardiner Coyne..." . . . . and so on.

He was a really distinguished "Entertainer" but I cannot find anything relative to his death 1900..I imagined it would be in one of the " Variety" Newspapers but nothing...Thought that would give an idea of who was at the Funeral...Gustavus is really driving me mad...!!!

The address 1901 Irish Census was the home of Henry G according to his Death Cert..(10 April 1900)..He died of Heart failure aged 61yrs. and his wife Bertha Eugenia was present.

Gardener Coyne played in Leeds in 1861 and 1865..he was also over in the IOM late 70s and early 80s Bertha Fletcher started appearing on the IOM Billing..(New Gaitey Theatre) 1881 and 1883.

Think he may have been in NY 1858 when he wrote this….

Poor Phoebe - it looks as if she and Henry were already separated by 1881 - maybe his affair with Bertha had been going on for a while.

I do wish we could find Gustavus.
I wonder if he was perhaps adopted/fostered and brought up under a different name, then reverted to his birth name later - at least by 1896. But there's not even any sign of him in 1901 or 1911.

Yes, various theatrical reviews in newspapers on FMP show that Bertha continued to perform under the name Miss Bertha Fletcher after her marriage.

Kind of Phoebe to die so opportunely and allow Gustavus's parents to marry...

I can't see a death for Phoebe , nor can I see her in later censuses; with any surname.
Maybe she went back to America - though I can't see any record of that either.
Maybe she travelled under her maiden surname, which we don't know.

Henry's still calling himself married in 1881.

"Miss Bertha Fletcher" - maybe Bertha continued to use that as her stage name.

I can't see Bertha in 1881 - and still no sign of Gustavus anywhere, which is odd.

Well done on finding previous wife Phoebe. The 1884 review of the Gardiner Coynes at Tenby referred to Miss Bertha Fletcher as also being Mrs Gardiner Coyne. Is there a death for Phoebe before the 1881 marriage to Bertha?
