An explosion or noise from firing a rifle can make a person deaf. He would have failed the medical for the army if he was deaf so the deafness must have been happened in the army. |

In 1903 when he was married was a carman, on the 1911 census carman army pensioner legally deaf. we can not pin his birth down on the 1939 census date of birth 4/6/1883 |

He was old enough to be in the 2nd Boer War 1899 - 1902 . |

Was he perhaps injured and pensioned out of the army? Or it could be that he had served for 11 or 12 years which would entitle him to some sort of pension even if it was not a full pension. |
