How would some one born in 1882 have a army pension in 1911

Was he perhaps injured and pensioned out of the army? Or it could be that he had served for 11 or 12 years which would entitle him to some sort of pension even if it was not a full pension.

He was old enough to be in the 2nd Boer War 1899 - 1902 .

Was he injured whilst a reservist as there was a general call for reservists in 1907 and my grandfather answered the call and joined up in August 1907 aged 17. He was released in June 1908 aged 18 and was placed in the special reserves. He served in WW1.

As Kath states he had to have either done enough years to be awarded a pension or was injured whilst serving.

In 1903 when he was married was a carman, on the 1911 census carman army pensioner legally deaf. we can not pin his birth down on the 1939 census date of birth 4/6/1883

Do you mean that 4/6/1883 was actually his birth date, or is that the date given in 1939?

Oh yes, you said he was born 1882, so 4/6/1883 must be what's shown in 1939 ????

An explosion or noise from firing a rifle can make a person deaf. He would have failed the medical for the army if he was deaf so the deafness must have been happened in the army.
