Michael Report 3 Apr 2018 10:53

I am trying to find information regarding my maternal Grandfather who was stationed at the barracks in Canterbury around 1889 - 1901. He married the daughter of Sgt Arthur Bond who was also stationed at Canterbury around the same time. I am also led to believe that my grandfather also served at the battle of Ladysmith? However later in life he assumed the name of Charles Kenhope the reason why I not sure, If anyone can cast any light on this person I would be very grateful. Thankyou - Michael

Seems he assumed the other name before he married.

Looks as if his wife also took up the name Kenhope as they are on the electoral registers in Lancashire in 1921 with the name Kenhope.

In 1922 he is on the electoral register in Sculcoates with the name Charles Samuel Henry Kenhope. Emily is not listed but there is another person with the name Samuel Henry Kenhope.

I wonder if this is where the name change originates. Seems Samuel's sister Sarah married a Kenhope:-

On the army service records Samuel/Charles gives his next of kin as his brother John Robert and his sister Sarah.

Sarah's marriage was 1891 and Samuel/Charles attested in 1894. Perhaps he decided to use her surname for some reason. ??

Michael Report 3 Apr 2018 17:54

Thank you Kath for the information you forwarded, I knew some of the information but it is always the little snippets that fill in the gaps of which there was a few. As regards Samuel changing his name to Charles Kenhope - I was wondering whether he enlisted under a different name because of his age as he gives his birthdate as 1874 when he joined the Hussars? I am also wondering whether he had to change his name because of a German connection in the family somewhere - which might have excluded him from enlisting? The period when he lived in Stretford - I was aware of as my mother was born there. But I was unaware that he was in the Red Cross or that he was at the Victoria Hospital which think no longer exists. The period when he lived in Sculcoates which is a district of Hull is where he died and where he is buried. As to his nephew - I think he must have returned to his roots in the south - as my grandmother returned to Stretford with her children where she eventually remarried.

Many thanks for the information and I look forward to anything else you find that will throw further light on Samuel.

Michael

This the first of the above marriages;

Marriages Mar 1926 (>99%)
KENHOPE Alice P Whitfield Barton I. 8c 783
Whitfield Jonas Pantland-Kenhope Barton I. 8c 783

Marriages Mar 1926 (>99%)
KENHOPE Florence B P Whyman Barton I. 8c 779
Pantland Kenhope Florence B Whyman Barton I 8c 779
Whyman Philip Pantland Kenhope Barton I. 8c 779

The marriage of Joan doesn't give Pantland as an alternative, nor does the one for Vera E P.

There's a marriage for a Marjorie P Kenhope in 1951 - no mention of Pantland.
I don't see the one in 1837 so far.

EDIT:

Vera was probably born Pantland in 1909.

Alice and Florence married in the same quarter of 1926, so were possibly sisters.

Just an observation but my grandfather was german too

He anglicised his name but it was obviously German anyway

The german connection never caused any problem tothe family as his children were all born in the uk with a British mother

This was all pre WW1
