Hi , I have a photo of my great granddad William Grundy and his brothers all in uniform in 1916 ! one brother, in the Grenadier guards, was added from another pic cos he died in 1914. I have searched the other 4 names in the military records but cannot find them , any ideas please , they are not wearing caps or badges in the picture !

The are a couple of Medal cards for William Grundys serving in the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. Can't say for certain if they are for your man. William was born in 1873- so 41 at the outbreak of war! Perhaps he lied about his age?

Austin Q you could volunteer after age 41. My grandfather did and was put in the Veterinary Corps - the war horses. He had a wife and 5 children. He was injured and returned home for a few weeks. When he left grandma was pregnant with my father.

Note the picture which was sent to him after my father's birth. :-D

This is fantastic ! thank you very much everyone ! I had assumed they were in the Notts and Derby , ie the Sherwood Foresters, because of where they lived .
but they were not coming up on this websites records , will try others in future too !

My Mum had said her Grandad , William was a Corporal so he must have volunteered ! :-)

Given the date of the enlistment (almost at the beginning of the war), I wonder if he had previously been in the Army or the Territorials and was called up rather than volunteered?

My grandfather was 49 when he joined the Army in 1914 and finding his service record lead me to an earlier Army record.
