Royal Scotts WW1

Stephen Report 12 Oct 2016 15:20

I have been trying to find the military record of my Grandfather who served in the Royal Scotts during WW1, he fought in the trenches in France and was a radio operator. I have done some searches but had no luck so far. His name was David Baird Young born March 28th 1896 in Hamilton. He survived WW1. He would have been a coal miner at the time of his enlistment.
Any help would be much appreciated.

http://www.theroyalscots.co.uk/help-on-research/ says that as there is no longer a Regimental Headquarters of The Royal Scots, they can't help with finding records. The page directs you to the National Archives or Ancestry.

If the records were transfered before WW2, its possible that his were amongst those destroyed during WW2 bombing and subsequent fire.

The medal cards were stored elsewhere. The only ones for David B Young are

David B Young
Regiment or Corps: Royal Army Medical Corps
Regimental Number: 72124

David B Young
[Ben Young]
Regiment or Corps: Royal Field Artillery
Regimental Number: 197447

Name: David B Young
Regiment or Corps: Machine Gun Corps
Regimental Number: 67235

There are over 1000 David Young names in total, including those with a different middle initial

Is there any chance that he remained in the Army after 1920? Those records are still with the MOD

Many thanks for your help, the medal card entries look like a good starting point, those first 4 entries you listed look promising . As far as i know je left the army after the war and returned to mining, he married on 1919, my mother was born in the same year, they lived in Musselburgh .
I wish I had more information, but unfortunately there seems to be zero paperwork anywhere in the family.
Thanks again!

Thank you AustinQ , I know the family history as to where they lived etc.
I suppose there is every possibility that he signed up under his stepfathers name, but I have not come across him ever using it before. If that initial B in the military record is Baird I would be fairly certain it was him, not a very common combination of names I wouldn't have thought, the regiment is right too... thank you very much !
