I am trying to find any information on Edwin Daniels. He apparently was in a boys home, and then won the Millitary Medal in the first world war. There is another Edwin George Daniels, but I have found to have a family, so wonder if this is not the same person. I would like to know how Edwin won this medal and if there is any other information on him.

Do you know where he was born?

There is this birth registered the first quarter of 1898 so the birth could have been the end of 1897:-

First name(s) EDWIN GEORGE
Last name DANIELS
Birth year 1898
Birth quarter 1
Registration month -
Mother's last name -
District DORKING
County Surrey

Where have you found the information about him winning the Military Medal?

Do you have any details of his parents or which children's home he was in?

The image for the medal card Alviegal posted above makes no mention of a Military Medal (if that man had been awarded one then the initials MM would be shown on the card). In fact, the above man's medals were forfeited in 1921.

Caroline, can you ask your friend for more info on Edwin - such as marriage, death, etc. Might help us make a positive ID to assist with finding correct medal card.

Is there any sort of inscription around the rim of the medal?

Caroline

Caroline Report 19 Sep 2015 13:00

All we know is Edwin was orphaned at a young age and was in a boys home. Will see my friend again on Monday if that is any help.

No idea if this relates to your Edwin George but an Edwin Daniels born 26th Dec 1897 is enrolled:

First name(s) Edwin
Last name Daniels
Birth year 1897
Birth date 26 Dec 1897
Event year 1907
School name St Thomas's Higher Grade National/Senior Church of England School, Winchester
Town Winchester
County Hampshire
Country England
Parent name(s) Mary Chilton<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Book type Admissions
Archive reference 177M87/A1
Folio / page no. -
Archive Hampshire Archives

Address is 3 Andrew Road, he had previously attnded school in Woking ham:

Admitted 25.2.07

Mary Chilton is in the columne headed parent or guardian

This boy named Edwin Geo Daniels with the same birthdate of 26 dec 1897 had been at school in Northants, note name of parent:

First name(s) Edwin Geo
Last name Daniels
Birth year 1897
Birth date 26 Dec 1897
Event year 1905
School name Evenley School
Town Evenley
County Northamptonshire
Country England
Parent name(s) M Chilton<<<<<<<<<<<<
Book type Admissions
Archive reference ZB122/43
Folio / page no. -
Archive Northamptonshire Record Office

He was admitted 8.3.1905. A girl named Rosina Daniels is listed underneath him with M Chilton as parent, she was born 14.9.1900, and enlisted on 20.3.05, two weeks after Edwin. They both left 25.3.07.

I found this possible birth for Rosina:

Births Dec 1900 Daniels Rosina Emma Wokingham 2c 344.

There is a post em on freebmd attached to the record from someone who says Rosina Emma is the sister of a Edwin George Daniels, with a contact email address, she also mentions a younger sibling, a Philip William Daniels.

This seems to be the family of the Richmond born Edwin form census 1911 already posted by MarieCeleste:

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census

Benns Cottages, 21, Kew Foot Road, Richmond, Surrey, England

Henry Daniels Head Married Male 40 1861 General Labourer Twickenham, Middlesex, England
Mary Ann Daniels Wife Married Female 36 1865 - Richmond, Surrey, England<<<<<
Amy Daniels Daughter Single Female 6 1895 - Richmond, Surrey, England
Edwin Daniels Son Single Male 5 1896 - Richmond, Surrey, England <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hettie Daniels Daughter Single Female 3 1898 - Richmond, Surrey, England
Annie Daniels Daughter Single Female 1 1900 - -

It may just be co-incidence, but there is a possible marriage for a Mary Daniels to a Mr Chilton:

Marriages Dec 1904
Chilton George Ringwood 2b 1527<<<<<<<<<<<
Daniels Mary Ringwood 2b 1527<<<<<<<<<<<
Tanner Charles Edward Ringwood 2b 1527
Warne Beatrice Alice Ringwood 2b 1527

Is she the Mary Chilton in the school registers? That would mean Rosina somehow turned into Annie though, in census 1901. :-S

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 20 Sep 2015 00:38

Looks like Rosina became Rose:

First name(s) Rose
Last name Daniels
Birth year 1900
Birth date 14 Sep 1900
Event year 1908
School name Fareham Board / Council School
Town Fareham
County Hampshire
Country England
Parent name(s) Mary Chilton<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Book type Admissions
Archive reference 52M77/J19
Folio / page no. -

Her address is given as FairField Cottage Brigefort. She enrolled 3.9.08. Previous school was Cottage Grove Southsea. She left on 4.9.08.The reason was that the admission form had been filled in falsely and she was returned to national S.

I'm drawn to this 1901, as I mentioned above:

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

Capel is covered by Dorking registration district, as per the birth for Edwin George Daniels above.

Ah, I see Kath has added a possible brother's birth in Wokingham which fits well with my 1901 census.

The trouble with deceased fathers on marriage certificates is that you never know whether or not they are "made up" in order to look more respectable in the eyes of the in-laws!!

Going back to the Military Medal (or is it a military medal, e.g. Victory or British War?), this is the closest mention I can find in the newspapers:

02 December 1916 - Reading Mercury

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/19328510

The age is about right.

ADDED: From what I can see, this Edwin DANIELL was the son of Jeremiah Daniell and doesn't seem to have been in a boys home.

If the info on the postem is correct (and I don't see why it wouldn't be as it was made by a family member) then I strongly suspect that this is Rosina mis-recorded in 1901:
