I am looking for the above soldier. All I know about him is from the record of his marriage in April 1917 when he gave his age as 28, his rank or profession as soldier, his residence as 2 Cadet Battalion Machine gun Corps, Pirbright and his father's name as Joseph Barrett, fitter's mate. When his first child was born his occupation was given as Sergeant in the 6th Rifle Brigade. |

Many thanks for all your replies. Kathleen has the marriages right and MarieCeleste thanks for the link. I am absolutely useless when it comes to National Archives and just go round and round getting cross. Something to do with age I suspect. |

How often does it happen that one asks for help and things seem to happen? I have looked at Findmypast many times while looking for this man and decided this evening to have one more try!! There is the record of his army service starting in 1909 and completing 21 years in 1930. He re-engaged in 1919 and joined the Tank Corps. That is probably how he met his second wife who he married at Wareham in 1926. I still don't know where he was born but he joined up in Old Brompton, Chatham, Kent so that seems a good place to start. |

I think Susan means the one that mgnv found, is the one that died in 1918- which is not hers. |

Thanks Gritty, I am indebted to you. I was on the way there having found the record on Findmypast which gave his birth as 1891 in Old Brompton, Chatham, Kent. That branch of my family will be delighted. When they asked me to help they knew Lilian Silvie had been married twice but had no idea to whom as the boys were brought up with the surname of their stepfather. |
