American war of Independence

I have an English ancestor who was a british Captain in the above war,who died in 1776 in New York. His name was Captain John Ridley. How would I go about researching . I live in Australia.

Could you explain what you are trying to research - is it his place in history within the American war? Or his family in England?

There's quite a bit about the Ridleys on the internet, they were a well known family in the North East of England. I believe there are some collections at the Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn, might be worth dropping them an email [email protected]

Also some articles in the British Newspaper Archives, one pertaining to his death:

Lately, at New York, in America, of a putrid fever, Capt. John Ridley, of the 28th regiment, son of Matthew Ridley, of Heaton, Esq

from Newcastle Courant dated 08 March 1777

There appear to be a few military mentions too.
