On my mother Lucy's birth certificate(1918) , my grandfather Ernest Lloyd has under "occupation" Motor Bus Fitter army pensioner. I never knew him as he died in 1927. I have been trying to find out more about him and his army service. On my parents marriage certificate Ernest's profession is stated as soldier. On his marriage to my grandmother in 1917 his occupation is a dairyman. Unfortunately there are a great many Ernest Lloyd's.

To narrow it down does it give a regiment or service number

If he was a Motor Bus Fitter then the army would have probably made use of him in the Royal army ordnance corps

Do you have his year of and location of birth

"The Silver War Badge was issued in the United Kingdom to service personnel who had been honourably discharged due to wounds or sickness during World War I. The badge, sometimes known as the Discharge Badge, Wound Badge or Services Rendered Badge, was first issued in September 1916, along with an official certificate of entitlement.

The sterling silver lapel badge was intended to be worn in civilian clothes. It had been the practice of some women to present white feathers to apparently able-bodied young men who were not wearing the King's uniform. The badge was to be worn on the right breast while in civilian dress, it was forbidden to wear on a military uniform

The badge bears the royal cipher of GRI (for Georgius Rex Imperator; George, King and Emperor) and around the rim "For King and Empire; Services Rendered". Each badge was uniquely numbered on the reverse. The War Office made it known that they would not replace Silver War Badges if they went missing, however if one was handed into a police station then it would be returned to the War Office. If the original recipient could be traced at his or her discharge address then the badge would be returned.."

Just to add re the marriage record that GlitterBaby posted for info, on the marriage register image it gives Ernest's occupation as 'dairyman', which tallies with what Susan said in her opening post about his occupation on her grandparents' marriage certificate.

I am amazed at all these replies and so quickly, in response to my post. I really appreciate everybody's help.

To Roy - no it did not give a regiment or service number, however this has now kindly been identified for me by Kucinta, who is correct in locating Ernest in 1911 at 59 Milton Road.

Thank you to everybody for your help
:-)

Dear Kucinta
