Margaret, (poynton) and (pointon) are just different spellings of the same name and back in the day people were not as literate as they are today so they would often never know how it should be spelt so could not correct officials who did the form filling on documents like census's and BMD cert

The variations in name spelling is one of many reasons why people fail to get to grips with researching their family history

The only way to be 100% sure of any research is to back up your findings with documentary evidance which includes Buying BMD certs

If you want to know who Harry/Henry's parents are then search results are a start but only his birth cert will confirm this.

From memory his mother was said to be Eliza not Elizabeth but his birth certificate should confirm which it is

In order to find my grandads parents I've tried to purchase a copy of Henry Poynton birth certificate
He was born in Murton/Easington in 1896 but how do I find out the exact date to get a copy of the birth certificate?

This is his birth entry in the GRO index - you only need the exact dob if the birth was in the last 50 years. This Henry's was 117years ago!

And on the birth certificate there is a cross and next to it says the mark of Eliza poynton mother

Margaret, Recieving certs can be a very emotional experience,

On page one of this thread rootgatherer posted the 1901 and 1911 census's for Henry
Mum Eliza is listed as a widow, on the 1901 and by 1911 has marriad a Thomas holmes, Henry adopted the holmes name on that census
