More records at Library and Archives Canada (For all the records here, use the help link)
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-110.01-e.php
16. British Military and Naval Records (RG 8, C Series) - INDEX ONLY 105012 Help 17. British Military and Naval Records (RG 8, C Series) - DOCUMENTS 105012 Help
From the early 1700s to 1871, the defense of Canada was primarily the responsibility of British military and naval forces. Therefore, the military authorities created different types of documents most of which are held at the National Archives in England in various War Office and Admiralty series. However, other records created in Canada remained here when the British Forces left in 1871. Library and Archives Canada holds many of those documents and they are regrouped into one major fonds, RG 8.
24. War of 1812: Miscellaneous Records Help 25. War of 1812: Board of Claims for Losses, 1813-1848, RG 19 E5A 139215 Help 26. War of 1812: Lower Canada Nominal Rolls and Paylists, RG 9 1A7 133532 Help 27. War of 1812: Upper Canada Returns, Nominal Rolls and Paylists, RG 9 1B7 183676 Help
19. Commonwealth War Graves Registers, First World War 46246 Help
“Black Binders” (volumes 39 to 144) It should be noted that the post-war movement of graves, of which there is sometimes a series of movements, will be recorded in these registers.
20. Circumstances of Death Registers, First World War 46246 Help “Brown Binders” (volumes 145 to 238) which focuses on the circumstances of death (if available) with particulars of the initial grave site, if known.
28. Veterans Death Cards: First World War 46114 Help
When Veterans Affairs was notified of the death of a First World War veteran, a death card was created and those cards are now in the custody of Library and Archives Canada and are used as a finding aid to the personnel records of the First World War. This collection includes death cards up until the early 1960s [so sometimes this falls within a provincial BMD closure period on deaths, which makes this collection quite useful on occasion]

Perhaps GR could be persuaded to transfer this thread to the new Military Chat board?

I couldn't find my uncles' names listed on the Forces War Records PoW site, however I did find one on another site, Captive Memories, which includes an Oral History Project where I was able to hear him speaking in 2 short clips, presumably from a longer interview . You may find your PoW ancestor here too... http://www.captivememories.org.uk/index.php?option=com_customproperties&view=show&Itemid=10
For Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) information and websites...

P.S. And one more, on this one you can search for your PoW. I found both my uncles listed here, yet they do not appear on other lists http://www.cofepowdb.org.uk/cdb2/Controller.jsp?action=simplesearch

One found the other day while looking for Naval records. It contains lots of snippets of fascinating information for anyone with Royal Navy ancestors. (Did you know that sailors were issued with knitted drawers?) :-) :-)

Hi Polly
WW2 records will still be with the MOD. See the link on the first post on this thread for the forms to order them. Unless he or his widow can sign them, they will cost you£30 with a likely wait of up to 9 months.

Hello!
I'm trying to find out information about my great uncle, who was in the RE (Royal Engineers) in WW1. If I know his service number, is there a way to find further information about regiment, service record etc?
I'm very new at researching military matters, so any advice would be most appreciated.
Thank you, Caroline

MILLITARY RESEARCH TIP for those who are in charge of GR.....
Today, the 11th day of the 11th month, is Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day. This is the date (one hundred years ago, as it happens) when the Armistice was signed at 11am, and it signalled the official ending to World War 1. It is a memorial day observed by Commonwealth of Nations member states (and some non Commonwealth states) to remember their armed forces who have died in the line of duty .
It comes around at the same time every year, so for most people it is very easy to remember, and is commemorated by the wearing of, or showing, a red poppy, as a mark of respect to all those who have fallen in war. Note - many GR members have used a picture of a red poppy as their avatar this week, as a mark of respect, but GR itself has used no such marker.
