If they can't give you the details, buy a copy of his BC. You were given the reference earlier

With the dob, it might be possible to discount or confirm any death records that may be found.

You can currently purchase a pdf copy of his mother's DC for £6.00. The 11 Feb price rise will take it to £7. That would give you the normal address for the informant, probably her husband. That would help if you decide to look for Primary Schools.
