Rena Schmidt, 86, of Shelbyville died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus.

She was born July 9, 1925, in Manchester, England, to Percy Slater and Bertha Lambert. She married Richard Schmidt Sr. on April 17, 1970, and he preceded her in death July 19, 2010.

Survivors include a daughter, Valerie (husband, Bruce) Jackson of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, J. Allen Bennett of Waldron; stepchildren, Richard (wife, Janet) Schmidt of Shelbyville and Jody (husband, Floyd) Jones of Hope; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Schmidt had lived in Shelby County since 1962. She previously lived in Manchester, England.

She enlisted in the British Royal Army during World War II as a private, serving as a radio operator in London, North Africa and Sicily under Field Marshal Montgomery. She also participated in the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Mrs. Schmidt came to the United States in 1958, and became a naturalized citizen on March 25, 1969.

She worked as a nurse's aide at Major Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1972.

She was a high school graduate.

Mrs. Schmidt was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed knitting baby outfits for the Pregnancy Care Center.

Thanks for all your help.Don't know the surname of who Ruby Slater married unfortunately.Nothing heard of her since 1946.Said to of lived in both France & USA-don't know how true? Said to of "run off" with an American GI,also said to of left from Southampton? Found a marriage for a Ruby Slater in Southampton to a John Nisbett? Could be a possible?

Unless there were two people with the same married surname and dob living in Illinois, the one with the address malyon found is not the Ruby born in England.
