Welcome to the boards. Is there a particular reason you are trying to find him?
If his birth was registered in Hendon, there's one in the 3rd quarter 1939 which may fit. Middle initial J?
What other information do you have? Names of his parents to confirn the correct registration? Siblings?

Have you contacted the person who listed a Peter J Collins 1939 in their tree?
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/messages/5761055/discover?rk=434436200
No one seems to list his parents, Hilda E Bannell & Henry F G Collins. As he seems to be the only child of the marriage, he may be the informant on their death certficates. Perhaps not as it would seem that his father remarried sometime later.
There are far too many records for Hilda E Collins to suggest likely deaths or 2nd marriages.
Do put him and his parents on your tree so that others can contact you in the future. For you to receive a message, you must make sure your GR account is always linked to your most current email address even if you allow your GR account to lapse.

Can you recall his father's name please? Sometimes we have to trace other relatives to find the person in question. Does/did he have siblings?
As you must realise, there a number of Peter Collins! We need to narrow down our search. Middle names or initials can help with that. Consequenty we need to identify the correct birth.

there were two marriages of an Emily C to a Collins between 1930 and 1940
. Harmsworth to Horace W, Finsbury 1933
. Harris to William H, Bethnal Green 1935
the first couple does not seem to have had a son Peter
a Peter with mother Harris was born in Croydon in 1939
if Emily had been married before, her surname when she married would not be the same as the mother's surname on her children's births, of course
or ... did you mean that Collins was Emily's name at birth and not by marriage?
a Peter J with mother Collins was born in Hendon in 1937, might that be the person?

Hello, Emily C Collins was her maiden name and was born in Riverhead Kent in 1912 and her mothers maiden name was Everest as far as I know she was not married and that is why Peters name was Collins, My aunt was living with a James (Jim) Trench who had a son William he was older and did his National Service in the RAF , he spent time in Aden and wrote to my gran quite often I remember the blues coming with the Aden stamps on , as I have said they lived in Oak Avenue/Road in Cricklewood No. 10 I recall . I cant think of anymore info to add. Kind regards Mick Collins

okay, this is annoying
I have posted about this 'Fench' business sometime in the last couple of weeks ... the name was 'Trench' as I recall ... I will try to find the thread
not finding it
what's up, Michael?
I absolutely know that I searched for and found the Emily Collins living with James 'Fench' on Oak Street in Hendon and there was more discussion of this ...
when I do the search again at 1939, for Collins living with Fench, the results show
Peter Collins 1937
this strongly suggests that he is deceased?? or that findmypast has made a rather big error by making his record public

this death is the best match for the PJC registered in Hendon in 4th quarter 1937
(although there were also two PJC births registered in third quarter 1937)
Name: Peter James Collins Birth Date: 13 Sep 1937 Date of Registration: Sep 2003 Age at Death: 66 Registration district: Chelmsford Inferred County: Essex Register Number: D7G District and Subdistrict: 468/1D Entry Number: 129
the middle name would match with the man Emily was living with possibly

Hello All, I hope you all had good Christmas and New Year. Now to add to my story I think where I have gone wrong is with Trench and Fench when I was young it was always Uncle Jim and Auntie Sis but know they lived in Oak Road / Avenue and Jim had a son called Bill , I do not believe Peters father was mentioned on the birth cert. Everything else you have let know is correct , there is one mistake , which is in the records my fathers name was Horace Archer not Arthur its a bit late now to get it changed on The Rangoon Wall. I believe that I am the last of the children from Horace and Leonard my sister Patricia died before she reached 60 The same as with my cousin Raymond Leonards son. I know that my Grandmother, who we was living with at the time, was heart broken when her two youngest boys went in two days of each other. Anyway enough about my life story, as I am a one finger typist it takes ages to type this. Regards Mjck Collins

Mick, when you came back to this thread you completely ignored what I had said earlier about the Peter J Collins born in 1937 in Hendon
the only way you are going to find out about Peter is to take a chance and buy a birth certificate or two
I strongly suggest the one for PJC born in 1937 in Hendon
Hendon is where Emily was living in 1939
the birthdate and middle name on that certificate would help you look to see whether that PJC has died
(for deaths after 1969, the deaths index that we consult at Ancestry shows the exact date of birth and the full middle name)
for names so common, that is the only way to search accurately
my suspicion is that the 1937 birth and 2003 death are the PJC you are looking for
the fact that I can see him in the 1939 register means that he is deceased (unless FindMyPast has made an error and released his record when it should not have done because he was born less than 100 years ago)
the same for Emily ... you need to know her full middle name and her exact birthdate, from her birth certificate
her death may be registered in a different surname even if she was not married ... she might have been known by the surname of a partner she lived with for a long time
if you find her death and get her death certificate, the name and address of the person who registered the death could give you valuable information
to make it clearer, when I search the 1939 register for
Peter Collins on Oak Street in Hendon
this is the result
Fench Household Hendon M.B., Middlesex, England Peter Collins 1937 James R Fench and 1 more person are on this record 1 more person who is officially closed
the '1 more person' is Emily Collins the 'person who is officially closed' could be Jim's son William
the search for
Emily Collins on Oak Street in Hendon
shows
Fench Household Hendon M.B., Middlesex, England Emily Collins 1912 James R Fench is also on this record 2 more people who are officially closed
- it shows Peter as officially closed only because of his birthdate
but what I think is that Peter is known to be deceased, so a search does find his details as I showed above
the question is this 'Fench' which is more than likely an error made by FindMyPast in transcribing the 1939 record, it seems
so the other thing to do is pay for access to the 1939 record to see what it really says

actually, TENCH it is ...
Births Jun 1905 Tench James Ralph Tonbridge 2a 815
Name: James R Tench Birth Date: abt 1905 Date of Registration: Sep 1966 Age at Death: 61 Registration district: Hendon Inferred County: Middlesex Volume: 5c Page: 161
James R Tench married in Edmonton in 1925
there were 3 births to that marriage
the first child died in early childhood the second I don't find any other records of
the third was William G in 1928
Name: William G Tench Mother's Maiden Surname: Harvey Date of Registration: 1928 - Jan-Feb-Mar Registration district: Bedwellty Inferred County: Monmouthshire Volume Number: 11a Page number: 117
posting the birth details because I think this is that William's death
Name: Gower William Tench Birth Date: 8 Feb 1928 Date of Registration: Sep 1974 Age at Death: 46 Registration district: Thanet Inferred County: Kent Volume: 16 Page: 1573
nobody was born with the name Gower Tench
and the fact that his death is registered under his middle name is why his 1939 record is still closed, because there is no death record to match his birth
there is a marriage in 1953 in Willesden with several children
one person has Gower Tench in their tree at this website:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/tree/results/tench/gower
actually the second birth was Rose M who seems to have gone by Rosemary
she may have married in 1945 and had children
if that was her marriage, a close relation has her in a tree at this site (same person with same Rosemary/Rosemarie in their tree, two different accounts, so you would want to send messages to both accounts in case one is disused)
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/tree/results/tench/rose?yearofbirth=1925&yearofbirthrange=1
I would be pretty sure that is the correct person, this is her death
Name: Rosemarie Wilson Birth Date: 12 Mar 1926 Date of Registration: Mar 2002 Age at Death: 76 Registration district: Luton Inferred County: Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire Register Number: B64F District and Subdistrict: 3151B Entry Number: 78
which matches her birth
Name: Rose M Tench Mother's Maiden Surname: Harvey Date of Registration: 1926 - Apr-May-Jun Registration district: Islington Inferred County: Greater London Volume Number: 1b Page number: 253
I can't find what became of James Tench's wife ... perhaps she too partnered with someone else and her death was registered under his surname ... her name is too common to identify her birth
(I wonder whether the daughter stayed with her mother and the son Gower William went with his father when the couple separated)
remember to click for page 2, below, to go on to the next messages
