They definitely went to Canada as the family over here received letters from them. This is how they knew Fred had died. Granted things passed down through generations can get distorted, but surely they wouldn't have made up something like that??? My Great Aunt Irene remembered her Grandmother Eliza very well, on the count of her being horrible, and so would remember her Uncle Fred leaving.

I have a whole tree full of other relatives from his family some dead but others who are still living i.e2 nieces, and a nephew who lives in Canada at the moment.

I am at a loss as to where to go now.

Kind regards

Sarah Adams

Have you done any research regarding other family members in this country, who may have had contact with any of their relatives who may be in Canada?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 30 Dec 2014 10:23

Please bear in mind that many family stories are not as accurate as they might be.......

See the info posted on the 26th concerning Canadian war deaths

When was Freda born? Was she supposed to be the same generation as Thomas and Fred?

In reply to Jacqueline's post.

This is how my line goes back to Ethel Ann Dabbs.
Me
Mother: Norma Roberts
Grandfather: Fred Roberts 1924 His sister (my Great Aunt) Irene Roberts 1922 (think there were 11 of them altogether but 3 died 11 children in total)
Great Grandmother: Ethel Ann Dabbs 1890/1 She married Albert Roberts 1909 Wolstanton.

Albert Roberts born 1890 Father Edward Roberts born c1860 Manchester Married Eliza Pope? born c1860
Children of Edward and Eliza -
John 1881
Jane 1883
William E 1886
Thomas 1887
Richard 1888
Albert 1890
Alfred 1894
George 1896
Reginauld c1900
Fred 1903
Emmy 1907

I do not know any dates for Thomas' departure to Canada unfortunately. All I know is he was the first one to go and then because of the mother, Eliza, who was a bi of a witch so I am told, Fred then left too. The story goes that he joined the Canadian army but was killed in action. I have no dates for this either. I know its like looking for a needle in a haystack but it would be nice to see if there are any of this branch of the family still living.

hope this extra info is helpful,

Many thanks,

Sarah Adams nee Capewell

Sarah

Who were your great aunt's parents?

Have you done any research using the freebmd site?

In which War was Fred supposedly killed?

You have Ethel Dabbs in your tree............how did you get back to her?

We need more detail than you have so far given us if we are to be able to help you

What was your great aunt's birth name?

If we can work back from her, we might have more chance of getting results

You have given Thomas's birth year as 1887 - so this is not the family I posted for 1911.

So could you tell us who Thomas's parents are, and where and when he was born and lived before he emigrated.

Unfortunately we were looking for the wrong people, with the limited information that you gave.

Thomas born Burslem, Stoke on Trent in your tree?

Hi,

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I spoke to a great aunt the other day and she said that her uncle, Thomas Roberts born 1887, emigrated to Canada but could not remember the date. She then said that His brother Fred Roberts (not on my tree for some reason) emigrated a few years later and apparently joined the Canadian Army and was KIA.. Freda supposedly moved to California, maybe she got confused and they all moved to California. Now she is 90 but she was very lucid and remembered more about her family from years gone by than she did the present! I am at a loss as to where to go now!!

Thank you for trying though.

Kind regards,

sarah Adams nee Capewell

Fred isn't on the Virtual War memorial either which is a record of Canadian war casualties.

No record of Fred on CWGC, but he may have served - and died - in peacetime.

There are several public trees on ancestry with the Freda born in 1919 marrying in this country - so the wrong one?

Or I am mis-undertanding who emigrated.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 26 Dec 2014 09:47

Do you have any dates to help us?

Were the people you have named siblings? Or, if not, how did they relate to each other?

If they were siblings, who were their parents?

patchem

patchem Report 26 Dec 2014 09:03

I think Sarah might have Freda Roberts born 1919, Stoke-on-Trent, in her tree on here.

Also, Fred born 1924 Stoke On Trent

Which would be these births, but several other siblings:
Births Dec 1919
Roberts Freda Dabbs Stoke T. 6b to 496
Births Mar 1924
Roberts Fred Dabbs Stoke T. 6b 4_9

So possibly this marriage,

Marriages Sep 1909
DABBS Ethel Ann Stoke T. 6b 437
ROBERTS Albert Stoke T. 6b 437

Births Jun 1910
ROBERTS Thomas Stoke T. 6b 198

Added:
That Thomas not with them in 1911, 2 children, neither Thomas, so a different one.

1911 Census
Albert Roberts
Age in 1911: 21 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1890
Birth Place: Longton, Staffordshire
Civil Parish: Fenton County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England
Street address: 9 James St, Fenton, Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Miners Loader Underground
Registration district: Stoke upon Trent Registration District Number: 361 Sub-registration district: Fenton
ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Household schedule number: 106 Piece: 16578
Albert Roberts 21
Ethel Ann Roberts 20
Albert Denzil Roberts 2
Harold Roberts 1

But cannot see them on records to Canada.

Added:
Ethel's death in this country?
Deaths Sep 1957
ROBERTS Ethel A 67 Stoke 9b 467

Welcome to the boards Sarah, and Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays if that is more apt.

If you can give us a few more details about your Roberts family, we can have a try. For instance, what have you found out already - yob, yod, when they migrated. Did they go with their parents in which case their names.

Although it varies from Province to Province, Canadian privacy laws are more strict than the UKs. Records are closed from anything from 50-100 years after the event.

You may not get much of a response today but as people recover from the Festivities, we can have a look.

Many of us use Ancestry.co.uk (or.com/.ca) it is free to access until midnight on 26th. Take advantage of it if you can.
