Hi ArgyllGran. I went on the site - recordsearch. naa.gov.au - to find out more about John and it looks like he lived with his Aunt Miss Elizabeth Rebecca Horwood. Take a look and you will be find it most interesting. It certainly cleared one thing up for me, I wondered why the crew were buried on the 25thJune, 13 days after the crash but reading the info on this site, it appears only my dad R L Lewis was buried then because he was found later under the aircraft, presume when they started taking the wreckage away. For a while they mentioned only 6 crew and the mother of John thought he was a POW, I expect because my dad's body had not been recovered until later and of course the uncertainty until after the war when more information came to light . Take a look AG. Regards John |

Took note about the Betty Fury topic. Re the funeral of Charlotte Horwood, I see it states Mr & Mrs J Fury and family so that must have been children John and Betty. I have been on the Peter Dunn World at War site, this evening. It was through Peter Dunn that I found the names of the other crew members 14 yrs ago ('that's how long I have been looking for families of the crew) and I noticed he was born in Townsville in 1948 so have contacted him in hope that he may have known the Horwoods, Fury or Jones families Jones being the married name of Betty Fury . Never know if Betty had children Peter Dunn may have gone to school with one of them. Regards John. |

Note "Mr and Mrs J Fury and family" in this funeral notice. Of course, John Harold was still alive at that time. |

The Townsville daily bulletin, in which MarieCeleste found the Roll of Honour mention of John Harold Horwood (the image shows his parents as Mr & Mrs J Fury, not I Fury as in the transcription) also has a further insertion in his honour, inserted by "his aunt and uncle, T and F Gleeson". |

Hi ArgyllGran. I have found a marriage for Betty Fury in Townsville only daughter to Mr & Mrs J Fury, Cook Street Townsville 15th Oct 1948 to a Henry Jones. So Betty was the half sister of John. Will try and find a death for Alice Fury in any Townsville newspapers to see if it states an address as Cook Street |

The birth records for Australia on Ancestry don't show births later than 1922, unfortunately. |

Looking through all the info you sent Alice Fury nee Horwood died age 56 but in 1943 her and James Fury were stated on Johns Horwoods records so they must have got married before 1943. |

Thanks for looking up Johns birth, I did wonder if he was illegitimate. I don't suppose he had siblings seeing the age his mother married. Appreciate your help ArgyllGran |

Alice would have no children with James Fury, as she was 56 when they married. |

Hello ArgyllGran. Many thanks for the additional info. I have just been on Ancestry and sent a message to someone on the Horwwod tree but I have a funny feeling that John was an only child so maybe too remove from the family for anyone to be interested in my information. Just have to wait and see. |
