Hi Jo,
I found that birth on Ancestry 1916/2005
It does say 1916 in my previous message.
Eileen
Not all babies are given a second name at registration, sometimes another is added at baptism. However I haven't found a Marsh/Bennett marriage.

Circa 1920

Age:
20

Nationality:
British

Date of Death:

War Medal 1939-1945

war medal 1939-1945As with most Armed Forces Serving Personal during the conflict of World War Two, Benjamin Michael Bennett was entitled to the War Medal 1939-1945. This medal was awarded to all full time service personnel who had completed 28 days service between 3rd September 1939 and the 2nd September 1945. Eligible personnel who had been “Mentioned In Despatches” during the War were entitled to wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon. Those eligible for a campaign star, yet who had their service cut short by death, wounds or capture by the enemy, still qualified for this medal.

1939-45 Star

1939-45 starGiven the information available to us it is likely that Benjamin Michael Bennett was awarded the 1939-45 Star for operational Service in the Second World War between 3rd September 1939, and 2nd September 1945.

Benjamin Michael Bennett would have been awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or “Mention In Despatches” also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Fighter Aircraft Crew who took part in the Battle of Britain (10 July to 31 October 1940) were awarded the "Battle of Britain" bar to this medal. In undress uniform, a silver-gilt rosette was worn on the medal ribbon to denote the award of this clasp.

Hi Shirley,

Regards his age - the military record states "circa 20", which, coupled with the fact that we can't find a birth cert for 1919/1920 suggested that we had to be flexible with his birth year.

I thought this was the RAF record to be honest, but if there's a more detailed record which would include his next of kin etc, then that's certainly something for me to look into...

It would be a real shame if I couldn't access his (possibly) adoption details, but I'll give it a go anyway, just to put my mind at ease.

Thanks for all your help Shirley...you don't know how helpful you've been to such a novice like me. I just hope I can offer my mother (his daughter) some information on her father.

Best wishes,
Jo

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 5 Mar 2014 18:31

but if he was 20 when he died he would have been born 1919/1920 ?

You say you have seen the RAF record but surely that will give his next of kin and his home address when he signed up .

If he was adopted you wont find a birth cert .

Official adoption anyway didnt start till 1927 So maybe his was a later adoption .

You wont be able to access any adoption records though as these are closed once the adoptee dies . Before then they are only only to the adopted person.

Thanks Shirley, we've seen this record we're just struggling to get behind it i.e. find his birth certificate to open more doors. We'll look down the adoption route, seems like the most plausible option now considering...

Hi Catherine,

No he wasn't married as far as we're aware. His daughter was born out of wedlock, hence she was given up for adoption. We think that he died before he was able to tell his family.

We may have to consider the possibility that he too was adopted by his parents...

Thanks

Catherine

Can't see a birth for Benjamin either.
You say he had a child, but did he marry?

Wondering if Benjamin is the adopted son of Mr. Bennett. Perhaps the poster needs to checkout the ER for that area of Bristol prior to 1940.
