The hospital is next to the Scrubs-------the convant is still on Portabello Road,,,,,,,,its still a mystery after just leaving you,you were found and someone just knew who to return you to!,,,,Frances Sullivan,,,,as left babies are just left and no one knows who they belong to.,,,,they become foundlings,,,,,


The Foundlings museum dont hold modern day records,,,,this was 1948.....

I seriously suggest you go to SS as a lot of speculation can lead to heartache and I feel you have this at present.

I think your mother must have been in turmoil when she left you, but it is important to start from the beginning.

Good to know the convent is still in Portobello Road; just goes to show you think you know an area, but they may know of the incident.

There really are some good comments here and SS and you need to study your birth certificate again as Fairthorn states - it gives you the best first leads.

Have had a look at the Irish Site. This is so good and would be great if Patricia went there. Alternatively, the hospital in Hammersmith would hold the details of the person who gave birth to you Patricia and you should give that a try.

Thank you all , In al the years never had so much help. My So called mother never registered me before she left. The lady who looked after me did but with very little information.she also had me baptised at the local Catholic church . Her family were not catholic she just thought to was right. Went to the church for help but even less info. Three Hammersmith hospitals at the time ,not the one near scrubs . The baby hospital a couple of miles away was pulled down many years ago. Will come back later .Thank you Pat

Patricia the records will have been archived even though the hospital is no longer there,,,,,,,,we can find out who has custody of them if you know the name of the hospital.

Do you know why the person that brought you up,,,,,,included the surname Shepherd into your birth registration?

Edit---------I'm sure things were about that you were not told of...

The lady who looked after me and registered me was called Shepherd, and i took her name.

So the lady that registered you had the name Shepherd - did you go to school from her house and when did you and she part company? Did you then go to another family from a placement?

I stayed with the same lady who i called nan until she died. except for a short time at age 10 in a children's home.

I have had a search for the hospital that may have been close to where you were originally left and it appears to be East Acton.

I am wondering if you could write to:

Making an FOI request - it is the NHS, I found on google:

Freedom of Information requests must be in writing, by post, fax or email.

For email requests please use the Department of Health contact form and write 'Freedom of Information' in the 'Subject' line.

You could then either send by email or post and give a brief story before going into too much detail. That way if they can help they will come back to you for more information
if it is necessary or refer you on.

This should give you the hospital where you were born, the name and contact details of your mother at the time. This will then give confirmation to you that any stories, names, etc. are correct and not inuendo.

See how you go with that.

I am of the opinion that all Depts of the kind will want to help or find it needs the 'too hard basket'. However, inspiration is a wonderful thing and you may find someone takes an interest and will help.

Only suggest that you may like to make contact with the churches in the area who may have baptised Frances Sullivan and may lead you to the family.

Go to google and key in Catholic Churches in Waterford, Ireland and then contact the church - I have no doubt they will wish to help and if they cannot ask them to direct you to who may be able to.

I am wondering how *Nan* was able to register a birth using her own surname!,,,,,,,,as it was an offence and would have been told this if she informed the registrar as she lacked details about your birth,it would have been questioned at the time....

Have you looked into *Nans* family.?

I always questioned the registration bit. It is just not permitted.

I think the suggestion of Nan's family is the right direction and I also think the hospital would have details of your birth - mother's name, etc. You definitely need to get this confirmed.

Patricia, perhaps you could search trees for 'Nans' family. Did she marry, your foster father, children of your nan, etc.

There is a Frances Sullivan getting married in Waterford in 1957. 3 marriages but all the bridegrooms called Richard so don't know what one that Frances married
