Find Living Relatives

Thank you all of you for comments and posts, I'm working my way through the suggestions and other fields that are cropping up too.

I'm also going to write to Southampton Archives to see what records they have about homes and insitutions. Also Hollybrooks childrens home in Southampton (found on the Workhouses site) and where their records might be or if they have been absorbed into present day childrens societies.

She isnt listed as a Canadian Home child in G. Randolph or Gladys Randolph./or Randolf-f

I don't have a subscription to GR's records but could see when they were born and when they left the country.

The records are no different on Find my past or Ancestry

not a lot of hope with them,
there may be a bigger selection on other site's.

I dont' have credit's to look at them,i just searched the name in migration & travel,
some of them are g Randolph ,so you would need credit's or platinum membership.
I will look again and see if any date's might tally.

Did you notice when they were born or when they travelled Martyn?

I just put the name in travel & migration on here 20 hits came up.
not saying it is your rellie but have you looked in the migration record's.
my grandmother had a sister who was put in barnardos as a child and she went to Canada as a child?

as posted above, if she was born with a disability then it was highly likely that the baby was removed from her and put in an institution.
I was a student nurse in the early 80's and spina bifida was extremely common. we had several wards full of babies with SB (childrens hospital). Most of the babies had been forcibly given up "because it was better to forget them" . In the early 1900's babies would also be damaged by the mother contracting disease's that no longer exist today.
If this was the case then she would have been told to forget her baby and get on with her life; and sadly that is what most mothers tried to do. It was the done thing. Even In the 1980's parents were not allowed to visit because this help the "forgetting" and made the giving up easier..
I doubt that a lot of these children generated a death certificate on their passing.
nb. the hospital I mentioned above also had a 'mental institution' attached to it and if the baby survived would have grown up and stayed until its passing (even as an adult)

I am very aware that if this lady is still alive with a different name, then she may not have any interest in her birth family, let alone whether or not her adopted family know that she even was adopted or given away.

Have you tried Barnardos?.they have an extensive database.

She would only be 6 in 1927 for legal adoption.....which may have happened.

Have you looked in the ACR indexes.as her christian name may not have been changed if adopted in or after 1927.

It's not clear who Ray's father was on the certificate, there are crossings out. Believe me I've tried those avenues too.

I think we have the same idea about Gladys and a home, or as I started this thread on the "living“ thread, it's her birthday today and she could be celebrating and maybe someone might read this who knows her, but maybe with another name?

Who was Raymond's father? Clearly not Harry as he was in the US at that point with another wife.

Perhaps Gladys had a disability and was sent away?

Yes that's Harry Randolph - the family dropped the name Tolmie and took up the name Randolph as the surname.

It's Gladys I'm looking for - I think she may have been put in an institution or home as none of the family mentioned her.

My grandmother had a half brother, who she was proud of and close to and not to be the same with a half sisiter is very odd. I know she didn't die soon after she was born.

I have looked and researched all the variants of the names and followed them up or back.

I have been researching family history for almost 18 years, and can ferret out all sorts in the past, but finding a more recent or living person is harder

shot in the dark !!

I have her certificate, and as she may be alive I have to be careful what I submit here.

It is something I have thought of, but why would you put your third child in a home? Yes I know that it might have been the last straw, but Great Granny wasn't that sort of lady.

There are lots of ifs, why's and buts.

If, she went into a childrens home, then she could be anywhere in the world and have been a child migrant.

Children's home records are hard to come by and a lot of papers were destroyed during the war.
