Julie Report 26 Jul 2013 14:34

I am looking for a lady who could be celebrating her 92nd birthday.

She was born in Southampton in 1921.

We are not sure if this lady is still with us or not.

I have exhausted looking through GRO records for matches and dispatches.

I have spoken to Southampton Registrar Office, with no luck in finding any marriages or deaths to date.

I have spoken to the Bereavements Office and they can find no records of her either.

This lady would be pre legal adoption records.

She would have been 18 in 1939 and 24 in 1945, she may be anywhere in the country or have gone overseas, whether it be with work or marriage. I have exhausted all the avenues I can think of.

No one in the family knew of her existence, it wasn't until my Grandmother died that we found out about her. She is her half sister.

This lady may be have been "adopted" by another family and have been given completely new names. Do you have a relative who has/had a birthday today, but with a mysterious background, or no birth certificate in the name she is now known?

Please can you help? Do you have any further suggestions, I live 160 miles away.

Many thanks for your time reading this

Julie

Hi Shirley

That was quick!

Her mother's maiden name was Woodman (it's a typo). Beatrice Ellen Woodman married Harry Randolph in 1903 and then went onto marry George Gapper in March 1922, but I should have said I'd duel tracked her with both names of Randolph and Gapper.

"Legal adoption didn't start till 1927", I know, that's my stumbling block and why I said "This lady would be pre legal adoption records"
:-)

so have you found her brother Raymond after his birth ?

looks like two possible marriages one in 1949 and one in 1957 Southampton

Julie Report 26 Jul 2013 15:18

Hi

lol I think we are too quick for each other!

Yep there is also another half brother, but we knew about him and he grew up with Grandma and Beatrice. This is why this was such a shock to find out that there was another half sister - Gladys, but she was never mentioned by Grandma or Ray and as far as the rest of the family was concerned.

This is why it has taken so long to try and exhaust all the possible and obvious avenues we have.

This lady is a complete mystery, but if she's still alive, which is quite possible, she could be having tea and birthday cake today. Hopefully this is with some family, but if not there is a family here, who couldn't wait to meet her!

Julie

Julie Report 26 Jul 2013 15:20

Yep and his death in 1998, he was well known and liked in the family.

Julie Report 26 Jul 2013 15:22

Yep that's great granny - we have all the family, none of them are missing just this one stray Gladys.

The informant was my grandmother

do you have her actual birth cert ?

Is it possible she doesn't have a father named? if so she may have been put in a home thats why no one knows of her.

Just thinking outside the box :-)

I have her certificate, and as she may be alive I have to be careful what I submit here.

It is something I have thought of, but why would you put your third child in a home? Yes I know that it might have been the last straw, but Great Granny wasn't that sort of lady.

There are lots of ifs, why's and buts.

If, she went into a childrens home, then she could be anywhere in the world and have been a child migrant.

Children's home records are hard to come by and a lot of papers were destroyed during the war.

Nope - not that one either!!

I have looked and researched all the variants of the names and followed them up or back.

I have been researching family history for almost 18 years, and can ferret out all sorts in the past, but finding a more recent or living person is harder

Yes that's Harry Randolph - the family dropped the name Tolmie and took up the name Randolph as the surname.

Yes that's great granny in service.

It's Gladys I'm looking for - I think she may have been put in an institution or home as none of the family mentioned her.

My grandmother had a half brother, who she was proud of and close to and not to be the same with a half sisiter is very odd. I know she didn't die soon after she was born.

Who was Raymond's father? Clearly not Harry as he was in the US at that point with another wife.

Perhaps Gladys had a disability and was sent away?

Julie Report 26 Jul 2013 18:25

It's not clear who Ray's father was on the certificate, there are crossings out. Believe me I've tried those avenues too.

I think we have the same idea about Gladys and a home, or as I started this thread on the "living“ thread, it's her birthday today and she could be celebrating and maybe someone might read this who knows her, but maybe with another name?
