Hi William was my grandfather and I am descended from his second marriage.
His first marriage is a total mystery in spite of the fact that as a teenager I worked for a firm of accountants called Nursey & Co in Earls Court, London and there was lady working in the office who was named Emily Walters and I was told she was my aunt. Naturally being a totally self-absorbed teenager I didn't enquire further! Now all my ancestors are dead and I have no-one to ask about her. I would be most interested to trace any living relations from that side of the family and learn about the first marriage of my grandfather. If anyone can help I would be most grateful. Cheers John Walters

If you get his wedding certificate it will have his Father's name on it, which will help in finding him in the censuses, and possibly directly show his first family. Do you know when his second marriage took place - when was your Father born? Thanks
Added: This death? William Walters Birth Date: abt 1862 Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1937 Age at Death: 75 Registration district: Lambeth Inferred County: Greater London Volume: 1d Page: 331

To find marriage(s). look at the following site
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Who were his parents?
Where was he born?
When did you work with Emily?
Was she single? How old would she have been?

I let John know about his replies to both this and his thread on Find Ancestors (Ann Walters).
He has replied to me but I don't think he has been able to find his way back - he is in Australia but I have assured him that there are always people around 24.7. :-D
John, if you get back here........as well as replying to the queries, it would be worthwhile taking jax's advice and putting the names you are researching into the Search trees box above.
You have William down as being born in Guildford - there are 4 or 5 other members who have the same person in their trees. You can contact them for further information.

Using the GUILDFORD info (thank you ,Cynthia)....................why didn't you include the location in your post, John?........................

This may be a red herring, as there were no penalties for not registering births until 1875, and 'your' William's birth may simply not have been registered.
We need you to answer the questions posed.........

I realise that none of the info relates to the man's descendants, but it's often necessary to work backwards before one is able to come forwards

Until John provides some answers, there's no way of knowing.
As William was a serving soldier, he could have married and sired offspring overseas. I certainly haven't been able to find him in 1891.
John's PM to me was , as I said, lengthy, but it contained nothing which was in any way helpful.

Oh dear! I am being curmudgeonly in not using the Board correctly and replying by using the "Send Message" button rather than the "Add your reply" box at the end of the the thread. Apologies to all. I am very grateful that skilled researchers like yourselves are interested in helping me. Whilst it is true that I had much of the information you turned up I did not know that my grandfather had an older sister called Lucy, nor did the details revealed by the 1911 census. Incidentally, my grandfather's father, also confusingly called William, died before he was born, so my great grandmother Lucy was left with a very small child and one yet to be born. Not easy.
