A big thank you to Rose for the information/lead on Henry Mustill. Just to update you, I ordered the marriage certificate for Henry R Mustill and it was in fact a certificate for the wedding of Harry R H Mustill with him using the name Henry. That was a real break through, so thank you so much. :-)

Thanks Rose, I have just ordered a copy of the Marriage certificate for Henry Mustill & Eileen D Mills to see if I can get some more information from that.

Thank you everyone,

The Harry Mustill listed as a Greengrocer in Southend on Sea is the correct Harry (my husbands father). It is also the same Harry Mustill who died in 1982 aged 56.

So the marriage to Gwendoline in 1948 is correct & I have ordered certificates for this. It could be quite possible that the wedding listed as Henry R Mustill in 1954 to Eileen D Mills could be him as the dates work - he was not known to use the name Henry though. His 3rd marriage to Sandra M Hughes would have been around 1960/1961 & we think they got married in Sydney, Australia. Although I have no idea how to find a record of this.

I notice that the death of Harry Robert H. Mustill in 1982 is in the Registration District of Southend On Sea.

Found this on Ancestry?

From 1967 to 1980 (only records available) there is a record in the British Phone Books, 1880-1984 for

Harry Mustill, Grngrcr, 199 Eastern Espl., Southend-o-s, 88170

What is your MIL's maiden name?

There's a marriage for a Henry R Mustill in 1954 to a Mills. I can't find a birth for a Henry R Mustill so am wondering if this is Harry.

Flick, no problem I'm not offended at all.

Flick Report 22 Jul 2011 11:07

Please don't take offence, but if your MIL isn't prepared to give you details of her marriage...perhaps it didn't happen?

There is an index of overseas marriages of British subjects on FMP (findmypast)

Thank you Flick.

My husband had no idea that he had a half sister until 2 weeks ago when I started to do the tree on genes reunited, we asked his mother who confirmed it. I have just ordered some certificates including, the marriage cert. so hopefully we can find some more information about Gwendoline from that.

His mother has now told us that Harry (the father) apparently gave permission for Caroline to be adopted by the new husband.

I'm a little stumped as my husbands mother said Harry then run off & married a "Jane" & then he married her... I can't find any records of these marriages but he was working on the Cruise ships going to Australia at the time & they may have been married there. Do you have nay idea where I can go for these marriage records?

The information we can get from my husbands mother is very limited.

To try to look for a death for Gwendoline, you need to know when she was born..........how old was she when she married in 1948? And what was her father's name?

Also..........what name is represented by her second initial?

For info....the 1948 marriage took place in Surrey.and it's the only one on Ancestry for the name Harry R Mustill.

There are three marriages for Harry Mustill with no second initial - all accounted for, and matched up with births and deaths

Flick Report 22 Jul 2011 10:29

If her mother's husband adopted Caroline, it would have been a 'Mother's Own Adoption'......a specific procedure.

If her father was alive, and could be traced, his consent would have been required

Caroline would thereafter be known by her 'new' surname

Debbie,

I don't see any marriages for Caroline under Mustill so it would appear she become Wilson.

Wilson's such a common name they will be hard to track down without certificates to give ages and middle names.

Thank you for the replies so far.

I have been told by a family member that Caroline was going to be adopted by her mothers new husband (Wilson) however, we are not certain if this actually happened. Does that mean any searches would then come up with the adopted name?

I'm not sure if the mother Gwendoline has passed away yet, but could look at getting some certificates for her - you just never know.

I have searched on the site but Caroline is only on my tree.

I'm in New Zealand so I'm not sure what sites would help me find her. I looked at a site to find details for her mother & stepfather (if they are still alive), they are:
Gwendoline M Wilson (Willis/Mustill)
Anthony H Wilson
Last known place to live: Eastbourne, Sussex
Married: 1955

Have you tried Search Trees on this site? There are other members with Mustill's in their trees.

You might want to get the first marriage certificate. You can then try to track down where Gwendoline was born and then search for her death. Could be Caroline was the informant.

I don't see a marriage for Caroline so perhaps she took the surname Wilson.
