I got excited too today. We’ve had a few sparrows and a blue tit on the feeders :-)

SuffolkVera Report 6 Oct 2019 11:34

What has happened to the birds? I put out some mealworms yesterday and they are still there. Usually either a robin or the starlings are on them as soon as I put them out.

SuffolkVera Report 7 Oct 2019 12:11

Things are looking up. This morning I have seen two blackbirds, a few sparrows and a robin :-)

Afternoon to you. I thought my eyes were deceiving me. You are lucky with all the birds and wildlife that you see. Our birds deserted us at the end of the summer when some of the big fields were all dug up and hedges grubbed out ready for a huge new estate to be built :-( :-( I am sure it is no coincidence that the birds disappeared as probably that is where they were used to roosting. Hopefully they will come back, we have sen signs of them returning.

Aww such a shame more houses gone up, but spose we need them!!...We also have aprox 60 ducks every morning to feed, (sometimes more) Vic is in his element , he nearly treads on them though. We have the woods at the bottom of the garden so we get loads of birds from there, feeders are every where for them from our 4 houses in the corner..:)
Hope your birds come back..

Yes I hope so too. Good to catch up though.

SuffolkVera Report 9 Oct 2019 17:26

Nice to see you again Jude :-)

You are lucky to have so much wildlife around. I envy you. We used to have a large garden, surrounded by farmland and with woodland the other side of the field behind us, so there was always a good variety of birds and other creatures in the garden. Then we moved to town to a house with a tiny garden. We put up feeders, a bird bath and a teeny, weeny pond and eventually attracted a few birds and frogs etc., but like Ann said this year they all seemed to leave at the end of the summer :-(

~`*`Jude`*`~ Report 10 Oct 2019 15:49

Hello SuffolkVera....

Strange, l wonder why they disappear like that?
We are also lucky in that (In some ways) we live aprox 50/70 yds from the river.

Looking at it right now its abit rough, no more rain please!!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 11 Oct 2019 12:46

Got your wellies ready Jude?

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 13 Oct 2019 17:08

Much more of this rain and Jude will need more than wellies - lots of sandbags and a rowing boat come to mind.

It must be lovely to see all the wildlife on and around the water but I think 50 yards from the river could be just a bit close for comfort. We are about a quarter of a mile from the river here so it's close enough to walk to in five minutes or so but far enough away not to be a flood worry.

Still no sign of birds apart from the odd pigeon or two :-(

~`*`Jude`*`~ Report 14 Oct 2019 21:33

The river is moving pretty fast, not risen over the weekend thank goodness,we might be abit further that 50 yds 70/100 hubby says, even so its not very far!! 60 plus ducks this morning..:)

Really chuffed as I have had our first ever(seen that is) Nuthatch on the feeder. I have also had the great pleasure of seeing a tree rat (squirrel) attempting to shin up the pole of the feeding station which I have liberally coated with petroleum jelly. That foiled the little B****r :-D :-D :-D

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 20 Oct 2019 19:36

Lucky you LaGooner. I've never seen a nuthatch in this country though I have seen one in the Netherlands. I laughed at your Vaseline smeared pole. I haven't seen any squirrels here but we used to get them in our old house and one of the things OH did was to attach a bird table to the top of a stainless steel pole. You should have seen the surprised look on their faces when they couldn't get a grip on it.

I filled the feeder that takes suet balls a couple of days ago and that's hardly been touched and yesterday I put mealworms in the ground feeder and they are still there. All I have seen today are a couple of pigeons and one bluetit on the peanuts. We are definitely a bird free zone lately :-( OH wondered if all the new house building going on around here has destroyed some of their habitats. I shall just have to hope they reappear at some stage.

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 21 Oct 2019 09:12

The feeders are on a metal pole but it still shins up it, well tries now :-D :-D :-D. They are not touching the suet feeds at all but still going for peanuts, mealworms and seed. I am lacking the thrushes and blackbirds but all the others seem present and correct.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 24 Oct 2019 12:08

Blackbirds and a robin have now returned to our garden. No doubt the starlings will be back soon as well. Blue and great tits are feeding and three collard doves.
We have never seen a nuthatch in the garden. Mind you I would have to look it up if there was one as I haven't a clue what it would look like.

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 27 Oct 2019 23:04

The Nuthatch is a similar build to a wren but blue in colour with a rust coloured breast and black markings on it's head, A very pretty little bird which I have only seen a few times before when I lived at home

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 28 Oct 2019 15:24

I am pretty certain I have never seen one from the description. Thanks LG.
