AnninGlos Report 29 Oct 2015 13:01

Not that many birds today, they don't seem to come when it is damp and dull like it is today. However, we seem to have two regular coal tits, as well as Great Tits and Blue tits, and up to three Goldfinches. Haven't seen our frog lately.

AnninGlos Report 1 Nov 2015 13:27

foggy here today and the birds were in a feeding frenzy this morning. the blue tits have discovered the coconut I put out and were squabbling over that, the coal tits couldn't deccide whether to eat the sunflower seed or the niger seed so were taking turns at both, meanwhile the single goldfinch plodded steadily on enjoying the niger seeds. Down the end of the garden a robin was busy and on the sunflower seeds were several Great tits, some quite small so probably this years.

Very misty here this morning but the sun came out and it cleared before midday. The birds seem to have a rota for visiting our garden and today is clearly starling day. Loads of them around and they very quickly managed to demolish several fat balls.

Other than the starlings we have only seen a couple of sparrows and a couple of robins.

Jane Report 2 Nov 2015 21:10

We were back in our summer clothes yesterday Ann :-D I even had my flip flops on LOL
My Window feeder still has food in tonight which is very unusual,so I don't think even the birds have out and about much today :-S

Lucky you Jane. We have had quite thick fog for last 3 days. No fog today but very damp here. Have washing on the clothesline which are just hanging, so they will need to go in the dryer very soon.

A few usual birds but not much activity to be honest.

Murky and damp early morning and evening but the middle of the day has been lovely for the last 3 or 4 days. Today we were doing an errand for someone which involved an hour's drive each way and it was so lovely that we chose to go the longer scenic route through the villages rather than on the main A roads. The trees looked wonderful in the sun and even where the leaves were all on the ground the colours were superb.

When we got back we were in our lounge with a cup of tea when there was such a loud bang that I jumped and slurped my tea over the coffee table. When we looked there was the perfect outline of a large bird, possibly a pigeon, on the patio door. OH went outside expecting to find a dead, or at least a stunned bird, but there wasn't a sign of a bird in the garden. How could anything hit a glass door with that amount of force and then immediately fly away?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 3 Nov 2015 17:06

that always amazes me Vera I assume they make more noise because of the sound through the glass. glad there were no dead bodies anyway. We have had loads of blue tits, great tits and two coal tits, plus a starling on the coconut and OH said there was a blackbird in this morning. I think it is because we have put out new, fresh seed, the old stuff in a large bag seemed to be getting stale. We won't buy such a large bag next time, good job it was on special offer when we bought it. Found a new type this morning, ground up peanuts, put it in a feeder and the blue tits love it. BY peckish £3.99 a medium sized bag (can't remember what weight it was.)

Oh I hate that 'thump' on the window and then you see the 'Angel Wing' pattern.
it is nearly always pigeons ,but I have never once found a body. The little birds that fly into the windows often break their neck. The lucky ones just stun themselves and eventually recover and fly off.

The Green Woodpecker has been having a field day today on the lawn.He has a really Bright Red Head.Redder than I have seen.No sign of the Gt Spotted Wood pecker for a couple of days.I hope it comes back .They usually manage to find the window feeder :-D
Filthy day again here. Not foggy but just dark ,dismal and rainy.I just had a wet and soggy Thomas come in with half a hedge stuck in his coat :-S.Lord knows where he has been.

kandj Report 5 Nov 2015 11:06

Vera, it's not good to hear the thud on the windowpane. I cringe and hold my breath as I go ouside to see if there is a poor dead bird on the floor. This happened recently but thankfully nothing visible for me to have to be brave and deal with!

A little brighter here this morning but rain is forecast for the next three days. Just washed out the two bird baths and cleaned /refilled the ground and window feeders
so we will wait and see who comes a-calling here today.

Jane

Jane Report 5 Nov 2015 16:03

Mucky day here :-S.I have had the lights on since lunch time as it is so dark.
Not a lot of activity here on the bird front. But there do seem to be a fair number of Chaffinches coming to the window feeder right now :-)

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 5 Nov 2015 17:20

Not seen any chaffinches here yet jane, we do usually get a few in the winter but they tend to ground feed what the other birds have dropped. We are still getting blue, coal and great tits and Goldfinches but not so many today, it has been very dull and wet all day. We have seen no sun for a week now.

Maryanna

Maryanna Report 6 Nov 2015 10:02

On Sunday we visited a new Wild fowl and wetlands place just up the coast near Hinkley Point. It is very new still but it will be interesting to see how the birds take to it.

It was very foggy which turned to drizzle but there were. Swans, Shellduck, Mallards, Herons and some Waders and other things I couldn't identify.

We are back in Surrey at present awaiting the new baby. Sitting in bed earlier loads of Gulls were circling. Then, in the time it took Himself to shave, I looked out of the window, mainly because the Blackbird was getting in a tizz.

First a flock of about a dozen blue tits appeared and around half of them got in the bird bath. One flew up to the window, sat on the sill and looked in at me. They were followed by about eight great tits. At the same time a pair of Wood Pigeons and a Squirrel appeared on the lawn, only the 4th time in thirty years I have seen one in the garden.

There were three male and two female Blackbirds, who are all still squabbling, then the Robin arrived followed by a pair of Collared Doves then a load of Jackdaws.

A few moments ago a crowd of Starlings flew into the Sparrows tree so they are all shouting at each other, there is a right commotion going on out there.

I can see about five Magpies in the big tree in the field behind and a flock of fancy pigeons just flew over.

By the time Himself came out of the bathroom most of them had gone. I don't know what is going on, in ten minutes there was more bird activity than for most of the Summer and there's not even very much in the way of food out there.

Think I might shut the windows !!!!.

AnninGlos Report 6 Nov 2015 11:18

yes maybe they are looking for a new roosting site Maryanna. How strange though to get all those birds at once.

Hinkley point sounds interesting, may have to think about a visit.

glad little one is doing well and hope your daughter doesn't have to wait too much longer. :-) <3

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 6 Nov 2015 12:17

I'm very jealous of all the bird activity you and Jane get Maryanna. I get excited and rush to post if I see one bluetit in the garden!

Another very wet day here. Yesterday I stood out in the pouring rain cleaning the bird bath and filling all the feeders. OH thought I was mad. Perhaps he is right :-D

Hope your little one arrives soon.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Nov 2015 12:31

Oh no Vera, the birds enjoy a clean bath (I think), the fact that they sometimes dip in our water feature even when it has not been cleaned out is neither here nor there. :-D :-D

Jane

Jane Report 6 Nov 2015 19:50

Bird Over load at Maryannas !!!!....That was an incredible amount :-D :-D

It's been quiet here today.Probably because it has been so wet.
Vera our birds have to use a very mucky birdbath sometimes. and I don't think they give two hoots :-).As long as there is water in there they are quite happy :-D..It's the dirty birds that poop in there that are the problem .Have they no shame??

Poor Cat is freaking out.He got really spooked last night with fireworks. I hadn't got him in before next door kicked off with loud bangs and whizzes .He hid for ages under the bed.But he has just now heard some bangs and is not happy.
Tomorrow night the big park is having their Firework Display. It is about 1 mile from us but if the wind is blowing in the right direction it sounds like it is all in the back garden :-S :-S.So the TV will be turned up as loud as we can stand it.
He has now legged it up the stairs :-(
