We had a heron hopefully perched by our garden pond the other day, but he was out of luck as we no longer have fish in it. There are plenty in the river the other side of the hill!

Island Report 1 Dec 2010 20:07

Hi Jude
I was looking for our Larousse bird identifier today but think it must be in van. Van was at work. Birders are like dogs trying to bury a bone in lino when someone throws something like this at us LOL

Hi Jean
We watched a heron trying to swallow a massive fish at our local ressie. It was really hard work for it. it kept throwing its head back and gulping then laying its beak on the ground. It had several goes but that fish was just way to big for that skinny neck. I expect a fox or two had a tasty supper though.

M-m-m-m-morning Jude
It's 2.5C at 11.30am here. I'm resisting wears gloves - indoors!

Yes, 1 or 2 kites are coming in to feed - that is x 4 or 5 hundred!
I'd love to see them against the snow but sadly too far in the cold for us.

Here's a link to the latest video, if you get a quick time window just click 'no' - works for me.

LindainBerkshire1736004 Report 3 Dec 2010 14:53

Afternoon everyone
Have been to our local store and stocked up on sunflower seeds and peanuts.
The garden is now buzzing with bluetits, greenfinches, chaffinches, thrush, blackbirds, redwing, fieldfare, robin, wood pigeon and jay.
They really needed some food and water.

Hope I have enough to keep them going through the cold spell and until I can next get to the village for more supplies.

The birds really do look bigger at the moment. So fluffed up to try to keep warm

Jean (Monmouth) Report 5 Dec 2010 11:34

Was watching a blue tit this morning, in this frosty weather , having a long bath in our pond. Couldnt understand how it was standing in the water as it is 2ft deep, and then realised it had found the feed pipe frm the pump to the filter, an inch under the water. It was there for ages, then flew off to the fence and sat fluffing and preening in the bit of sun.

~`*`Jude`*`~

~`*`Jude`*`~ Report 5 Dec 2010 11:58

Awww bet that was good to watch, especially as you have'nt had the birds in the garden for ages. Your pond is very important, our bath water keeps freezing.

We've had the usual in now for a few days , all very hungry!! One daring robin came right up to the patio doors. Vic has put seed on some logs and the window ledge:o)
One squirrel appeared too:o)

LindainBerkshire1736004 Report 5 Dec 2010 13:10

Still getting the birds coming down, but the Jay has worked out how to get in and out of the covered bird table(like a little house). So he is down a lot taking mainly peanuts.............. though there are some on the ground and in the feeders.

Our dining table faces the garden so when having early dinners (whilst hubby is on late shift) we are ammused watching their antics and so much activity from the various tits and finches, not least to say one very territorial Robin who has learnt how to get sunflower seeds from a hanging feeder.

Enjoy the slight break little birds.

Linda :o) XxX

PS Reading back saw about the herons, I have an amusing picture I took about a year ago It is of a Heron sitting on a notice board which says in big letters
" NO FISHING>>>>> HERON'S ANGLING CLUB " LOL
