Help, I uninstalled something, rebooted, now a lot of my icons on my desktop have disappeared. They are mostly folders I had created. Does anyone know how to get them back. They have stuff in them I need.

If you remember what you named them, try a search................usually works for me and I'm not that good with computers.

*understatement of the year*

Try system restore...restoring back to an earlier day/time.

Start menu...
All programs...
accessories...
system tools...
system restore...

I think...!!

Maybe someone else can add if this is wrong..

Good luck.

Nooooooooo - only use System Restore when you have to - it isn't the cure all that people seem to think!
I don't see how uninstalling something would affect your desktop - what was the programme you uninstalled?
Which version of Windows are you using?

Julie Report 4 Dec 2007 20:27

Ooopss....lol

Ok...best not restore then....the Sheep knows best.

You should throw a few IT lessons our way I think..!!

Jules, I am planning to put a help thread up at some point in the (not TOO distant) future with tips, shortcuts, general maintenance advice, problem solving etc. If anyone has any specific requests please give me a shout.

As I said DON'T do a system restore.
Also, try to keep your computer activity to a minimum until you have relocated the missing folders and contents. When something is deleted it isn't really deleted. All that happens is that the space on the hard drive is marked as available for overwriting so if you don't do anything new, you limit the chances of the information being lost through overwriting.
As said earlier, you could try a search for one of the missing files, but you also need to discover why they disappeared in the first place.

Also, how did you remove the software? Was it through Control Panel and Add/Remove Programmes?

Hi Jules,

I ended up with having to delete all the pictures on my phone, couldn't download them onto computer either. I had too many on the phone to pay and send them to my computer though.

Why is everything so Hi Tech these days.

Errol

I went on findmypast and uninstalled the viewer from there.

eRRolSheep Report 4 Dec 2007 21:22

If you are actually referring to Deja Vu (or whatever it is called) then I cannot really see how removing the viewer would cause the problem as you have described, because it is only a browser plug-in rather than a standalone programme.
The other issue, however, is that you say when you did try to run System Restore it would not allow you to, which suggests some other problem.
