It wasn't so long ago that 'non-conformists to society' were locked away. I worked in a psychiatric hospital in the 70's (showing my age now!). One chap was 43, and had been there 40 years because he was an epileptic. Another 'patient' was a woman having a sex- change! I know the authorities like to counsel people, but incarcerating her was a bit much. He was let out about a year after the op. Sad to say a lot of patients were ex-army. |

Maggie, Remember seeing a programme on TV about a woman who had been put away because she had a child out of wedlock - she was kept in for MANY years - the world was quite a different place by the time they finally let her out. Doesn't bear thinking about does it. |

Look at the Magdelane Covents in Ireland ,Liverpool and some in Scotland too,women and girls locked up in them for years,some for having babies out of wedlock, many of them victims of abuse, others for no reason other than they were too pretty for their own good,and they were in danger of being popular with the boys.
