I know all the symptoms of an under-active thyroid. I spent six weeks in St. Bartholomews Hospital in London and they discharged me saying "it's not your thyroid". Another few years later and a few kilos heavier, and visited many doctors, a doctor in Hilversum said to me "I think it's your thyroid gland". I used to fall asleep as soon as I got in the car, I had a puffy face, dry skin and hair, lethargic. In the middle of summer I was wearing a thick winter coat! Yes, always cold. Anyway I soon had treatment and am ok. I had to sit before a whole room of doctors whilst having treatment to show my dry skin etc. I'm glad I was able to do this so that in future doctors could recognise the symptoms. |

Under active thyroid makes you feel tired, sleepy and gives you coarse hair and dry thickend skin. You feel the cold more and don't lose any weight even though you eat less whereas an over active thyroid makes your metabalism increase, you don't feel the cold so much, eat more and lose weight and have increased heart rate and sleep less. Hi Fiona, Just arrived home from visiting Doctor to get results of blood tests I had taken last week regarding this dreadful weariness that I have been feeling all the time. I had a very bad virus in February and he says it has left me with Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome. It will take quite a while to get out of my system. I am going to The Health Stores tomorrow and getting something herbal as I want to be fit and ready for my holiday in 4 weeks time. Maybe you should go and have blood tests taken. |

fiona, is the clue in your thread on rain. You say you have a 7 month old son - enough to make anyone tired. But it could still be mild post natal depression. Ann glos |

Fiona if it is really bad you should see a doctor and not try to treat yourself. If it is just that you feel lethargic and the weather, if it is gloomy etc makes it worse it could be mild depression, again your doctor would help you. As someone else said, a good healthy diet and plenty of exercise should help. Chocolate and caffeine and sugary things only give an instant boost, make you feel great fro half an hour then much worse afterwards. ann Glos |

Are we talking about tiredness at the end of the day or tiredness all the time? Viv. |

Be careful with the herbal remedies!!!!! I would recommend a combination of good diet (loads of fruit and veg, pulses, grains etc) plus more exercise. It always seems a bit much to get out and do some exercise when tired but I always find I feel much better afterwards - and usually more awake too. Angela |
