There are currently two threads going about this same subject, which means some people might get missed. As this is the original about the Wakey do, perhaps we could make this the one & only "official" one. I'll get too confused with two on the go...! Will most people come by car & be able to easily get from the "history do" to a pub? or does the pub venue need to be walkable? Helen

Susan from Otley The station is not that close to the History venue. Definite taxi job; perhaps five to ten minutes depending on the traffic. I might be able to pick you up from the station, but won't know for definite until nearer the time.

Hi All I should be able to pick up a few people from the train station if they need it. So are we definitely going ahead with this event then? I will ring around a couple of the pubs in the area and see if they can accommodate a group booking that Saturday. Will it be lunch or dinner? and how many do you think will attend? Joanne

Thanks Susan. It's my fault really as I started this thread and then had the brain wave that we could combine this event with our meetup. Hope Amy on the other thread doesn't mind me doing this. Don't really know who's in charge of organising this! I'm from Ossett (or that's where I live now) Joanne

Sue from Wakefield Report 21 Sep 2004 21:48

Hi Joanne, we can all be in charge of organising this one. We already have a date and event (Thornes) all we need now is a place to gather for a "pie 'n' pint!!" Sue xx

Hi Sue(Dale) Despite living locally, I don't know the pubs of Wakefield. Not too bad on Normanton & Altofts. Would people be willing to come over here do you think? Helen

Cougarjo Report 21 Sep 2004 22:03

I'll check out a few places tomorrow and then post my findings tomorrow night. Will it be lunch or dinner we need? I'll check Bulls Head in Horbury as I went for a meal there a few years ago and as I remember we were in a separate section (it was a hen night, although a quiet one!). Joanne

Lunch or dinner? I suppose it depends on whether we get to the FH thing early & get out early, or take a break midway through! How many are likely to come? I gather from the other thread that you have had a Yorks meeting before? Was it well attended? Helen

Hi Helen, the only place in Normanton I can think of that would be suitable would be The Village. There are some places in Wakefield itself which are big enough, but I don't know how packed they get. There is the Cedar Court Hotel that is very big and do some lovely food. Don't know the prices though. That's just off the motorway and not that far from Thornes. There are some pubs over the road from Westgate train station also that do food (could always do the Westgate run while we're at it!!) Sue xx

Sue from Wakefield

Sue from Wakefield Report 21 Sep 2004 22:32

PS the Westgate run is supposed to be a challenge. People say that you can't drink in all the pubs there. Apparently you would find it impossible to have a drink in all the pubs up one side of the street then go back down and drink in all the pubs on the other side!! I did try in my mis-spent youth...boy did I try!!! lol Sue xx

Joanne I was looking at thomson local on internet last night, quite a few pubs around centre of wakefield or round thornes rd and lane. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT IF GAYNOR IS WELL ENOUGH SHE WOULD LIKE TO COME TO THE YORKS MEET. Sue

Hi I would love to come but I will have to sort out train times first and as I have only ever been to wakefield once before by car I would need directions from the station Bren In Oldham

There is a Brewsters not far (few mins drive) from Thornes and then there is Walnut Tree 2 for 1 (so cheap food) not too far, just past Asda Wakefield.
