Just an Idea, but to put a stop to some of the nonsense on these boards I would like us to discuss this idea. Why not a facility to allow us to enter a member's number and be shown the real name of the member? There may be some who think that on this site we should be anonymous, but please remember that every one of us, at the beginning had our real names on display until we decided to play, and if GR had their own way that is probably how it would stay.

I have no probs with that Jim but I was advised to keep my name to myself in case of hackers etc. Malcolm Ives

You gonna mail the idea to GR Grampa? I think it's the bestest suggestion on this board in a long time. Gerri

I've got no probs with that. I used my full name to start with then changed to Jeanette in East Yorkshire and have been this ever since. Oh, apart from when I was Green Jelly for a few hours the other day! lol

I think you need to be very careful about having your details on view for everyone to see. I am Maz on here, why does anyone need to know my real name, with it they can then find my address and lots more details about me. I have children, and my aim is to protect them, opening myself on here or anywhere spells danger in some cases! Maz x

good idea - I suggested something similar to them myself - that when you click on a name to send a message, or when you receive a message, that the persons real name is displayed.

I'd have no problem at all displaying either my name or my membership number, or both, GJ. It shouldn't be necessary though should it. There are loads of other sites where people use 'aliases' or 'funnies' like we do on here and I don't think it creates problems elsewhere. None that I am aware of anyway. Our membership numbers are available - I've recently found out - with the hovering cursor haha, although cos I'm such a techno-turkey I had to be told how to do it. Jan :-)

If the majority are in agreement I will ask them to look at the thread. That is why I put it up for discussion because although I often feel that I have had a bright idea, the rest of the World doesn't necessarily always agree!

Maz I suppose you do have a point actually. Would it stop you from coming on here if your real name was available?

Unknown Report 13 Mar 2005 23:55

Just one thing Jan, Seeing the membership number doesn't mean you know who it is. That's why I am suggesting the display of the real name. We can still use our fun names and change them as often as we like to fit in with the humour of the moment, but it will prevent people being malicious because they hope not to be recognised. Have no quams about that. The only reason that I changed my name was that all my friends call me Spud. In the end do you think that it will bother people who are out to cause bother if you know their real name?

In answer to Maz, As I said earlier originally when we sign on our proper names ARE on display. That is the way GR designed it.

No Jim, that's been adequately demonstrated this evening without a doubt. It just does seem ridiculous that we have to start legislating for these idiots who don't have the courage to stand up and be counted. Jan :-)

Good point Mike. If we we're going to have our names on display then this board would have to be a no go area for non members.
