Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 25 May 2005 10:38

Thanks Les! Have moved onto The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (what a name!) which is also turning out to be very good! Maz. XX

Hi Maz, I loved that book 'PS I love you' also....it was a great read. If you like that type of story the two books I suggested on Mikes other site would interest you as well. Also try Postcards from Wits End by Sarah Harvey. Another great read. Lesxx

If it's ok with everyone I'm going to delete this thread? It's served its purpose and we now have a review thread and a new choice for July book? So by tomorrow it will be gone. xx

Hi Mike and Everyone, Sorry I don't like the look of either of the June books. They look a little heavy. We are in the middle of buying/selling and getting ready to move so not on here every day. I will look out for the new threads and am ready to suggest a book. I like the idea of aligning it so that we are starting on the first of each month. Now I am off the paint the hall walls......it is all go!!!! Lesxx

Hi Mike and all, Good idea about the 2 separate threads. Will post my bit about L van der P on there. I had a good rummage through at work this week as we have several reading groups and they all have different books! Have got a couple of suggestions, so will add them when the new thread appears. Yes, have got the Ivan wotsit book here and it is about one day for one bloke in a labour camp. Its only short though, so hopefully won't be too much of a challenge. Can I just mention that I am reading the Bookseller of Kabul and it is fab! Maz. XX

Dee, Thanks, taken from the web: This shattering glimpse of the fate of millions of Russians under Stalin shook Russia and shocked the world when it first appeared. ... a stark description of life in a Siberian labour camp. Well our brains have certainly been tested in the first 2 months of this book club!

Thanks Ann- Here's a reminder for anyone else interested. June Books: A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexandra Solzhenitsyn ( I have no idea what the latter is about) Don't forget if you can't read them for whatever reason look out for the following months books and join in if you can.

Maz, Totally agree that July books should be more 'light' reading -- Don't forget Junes books have been chosen already by vote. Save your thing on Van Der Post until the review thread? If you don't mind? To be honest if I realised Merry Christmas was so heavy I probably wouldn't have chosen it (I've read 2 other books at the same time! just for easiness x ) Ann, Thanks again and right as well. What I was thinking of doing on Sunday 22nd was starting 2 threads -- one where all the reviews will be and another for July choice of book where people can list their choice and then we'll vote say by end of month? Then all new books can be started on the 1st of each month. Does that make sense? It doesn't to me lol

AnninGlos Report 20 May 2005 14:20

Hi I was away for a couple of weeks, during which i read the Seed and the Sewer. have only just caught up with this thread. I think Les's idea of voting for a couple of books is best. Don't like the idea of a list and we all choose what we want to read as we wont all be reviewing the same book and it could get confusing. I also feel that, to be fair to people who have books they would like to read, the books should be able to be repeated for say two extra months after they lose the first vote. They may only lose because the one chosen is preferred, not because people don't want to read it. maybe if there are no votes at all for a book it coul be dropped off. I think we need two books chosen a month because there are some books that you just can't get into (I had that problem with Captain Corellis Mandolin). Ann Glos

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 17 May 2005 22:03

Hi Dee! I will hang on to it then if thats ok with everyone. Can easily put it on whenever required! Started the Bookseller of Kabul now! Oh, Mike, just wondered, as the first two months books are all quite 'heavy', whether we could try for something a bit lighter for the 3rd?? Doesn't have to be girly or funny, just maybe not such a serious theme. Anyway, see what the consensus is and I will try and think of some suggestions. Maz. XX

Hiya Mike and all Just finished the Seed and the Sower. Will have to think about it a bit now so I have something to say !! I have always been good at the reading and not-so-good at the reviewing! I have found a piece about Laurens van der Post's lifestory - shall I post it on this thread?? I think it is quite interesting in relation to the S and the S. Maz. XX

Evening to All, Jude, Sorry to hear you don't feel up to reading right now, but at least you'll have loads of ideas for new books when you get back in the swing? Dee, I couldn't put that book down a very rare one I read all in one go! Also never realised it was actually a true story based on the woman deported. Bugs, ? sorry don't know proper name - whoops just saw Brenda after I added this - sorry Brenda -- glad you got it sorted with Amazon. Review around? 23rd May for this months book -- I have a few things I can't wait to say! lol Think I might do a seperate thread for the review so keep your eyes peeled.x
