Hi Les That sounds like a good idea. We had better start putting our thinking caps on and come up with some suggestions. What do you think Mike? Dee xx

Dee - the French book was very good - finished it already. He is writing the next one called Merde Actually apparently! Its NOT a true story, as far as I can gather, but a great quick read! Have gone back to S and S. About 100 pages in. Doesn't he do fabulous descriptions! Maz. XX

Evening All, Nice suggestion Les - I can only count to 5 though Lol! Only thing is you might get the same books being suggested all the time? Maz, I've got back into Mr Lawrence a bit now -- it is one to concentrate on! I've been reading another one in between though! About convicts to Australia! and that was easy and light reading. Remember Me by Lesley Pearse

Hi Maz Just spotted your comment about the descriptions in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, yes they are brilliant. Was disappointed with the DVD - still haven't been able to watch all of it. Will have to look out for the Lesley Pearse book Mike, it sounds good Dee xx

Hi Mike, Well maybe we could decide that once a book had been suggested once that it couldn't be reintroduced say for 6 months...oh lol....talk about making a easy thing diffucult. Apologies everyone....sometimes my brain just runs on......and on..... Just read Blessed are the Cheesmakers also a bit lighter but a good read. Lesxx

A salutory tale. I ordered Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence and A Child Called It from Amazon (their third party second hand unit). They were expensive eg £17.99 for Merry Xmas, anyway 16 days later no books. Have complained to Amazon and really I am on my own with this problem. If I get to the stage of not getting my money + postage back perhaps they will help, but they keep telling me to wait a little longer. They are supposed to despatch within 4 days !!!. I managed to get a copy of A Cild Called It from a friend, but I wont be ordereing from that particular part of Amazon again. I have used the ordinary part before and it has been fine. I AM CHEESED OFF 11

Hi Brenda Sorry to hear you have had such a poor experience of Amazon's 'used' book section. I have used them on many occasions and never had any problems. Hope you can get it sorted out soon. Did you order by credit card? If so I the credit card company should be able to help you resolve the matter Dee x

Amazon have agreed to reimburse me for the goods not received but I have also contacted the cc company who are going to send me a form, so hopefully I shall receive a refund in due course. brenda

Evening to All, Jude, Sorry to hear you don't feel up to reading right now, but at least you'll have loads of ideas for new books when you get back in the swing? Dee, I couldn't put that book down a very rare one I read all in one go! Also never realised it was actually a true story based on the woman deported. Bugs, ? sorry don't know proper name - whoops just saw Brenda after I added this - sorry Brenda -- glad you got it sorted with Amazon. Review around? 23rd May for this months book -- I have a few things I can't wait to say! lol Think I might do a seperate thread for the review so keep your eyes peeled.x

Hiya Mike and all Just finished the Seed and the Sower. Will have to think about it a bit now so I have something to say !! I have always been good at the reading and not-so-good at the reviewing! I have found a piece about Laurens van der Post's lifestory - shall I post it on this thread?? I think it is quite interesting in relation to the S and the S. Maz. XX

Hi Dee! I will hang on to it then if thats ok with everyone. Can easily put it on whenever required! Started the Bookseller of Kabul now! Oh, Mike, just wondered, as the first two months books are all quite 'heavy', whether we could try for something a bit lighter for the 3rd?? Doesn't have to be girly or funny, just maybe not such a serious theme. Anyway, see what the consensus is and I will try and think of some suggestions. Maz. XX

Hi I was away for a couple of weeks, during which i read the Seed and the Sewer. have only just caught up with this thread. I think Les's idea of voting for a couple of books is best. Don't like the idea of a list and we all choose what we want to read as we wont all be reviewing the same book and it could get confusing. I also feel that, to be fair to people who have books they would like to read, the books should be able to be repeated for say two extra months after they lose the first vote. They may only lose because the one chosen is preferred, not because people don't want to read it. maybe if there are no votes at all for a book it coul be dropped off. I think we need two books chosen a month because there are some books that you just can't get into (I had that problem with Captain Corellis Mandolin). Ann Glos

Maz, Totally agree that July books should be more 'light' reading -- Don't forget Junes books have been chosen already by vote. Save your thing on Van Der Post until the review thread? If you don't mind? To be honest if I realised Merry Christmas was so heavy I probably wouldn't have chosen it (I've read 2 other books at the same time! just for easiness x ) Ann, Thanks again and right as well. What I was thinking of doing on Sunday 22nd was starting 2 threads -- one where all the reviews will be and another for July choice of book where people can list their choice and then we'll vote say by end of month? Then all new books can be started on the 1st of each month. Does that make sense? It doesn't to me lol

AnninGlos Report 20 May 2005 20:40

Yes Mike, it makes sense. having a senior moment, can't remember the June books at the moment!!! Will have to look back over the thread! Ann glos

Thanks Ann- Here's a reminder for anyone else interested. June Books: A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexandra Solzhenitsyn ( I have no idea what the latter is about) Don't forget if you can't read them for whatever reason look out for the following months books and join in if you can.
