Thanks to everyone. It was very close but the winner with 4 votes and June Book of the Month is: A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer I put the names in the 'hat' of those who voted for this book as they get to choose the next one ... the 'winner' is: ROSALYN BARCLAY So Rosalyn your choice next (23rd May) then another nomination and vote for the next book. Happy Reading everyone and look forward to the review on our first book. ps. I know that doesn't sound right - I can't think of any other way of doing this unless its a straightforward nomination and vote system? Help again! lol

Mike We seem to have had several popular suggestions and a few people are off out to find some of the books on the list. It's just an idea, wondered if the 2nd and 3rd choices could be the next books to be read? As we don't all come on line at the same time it is difficult to select a book, perhaps if we did it once a quarter and had a reading list for that quarter it would help. Just an idea, what do other people think? Dee x (Hope you kept the ballot papers Mike!!! LOL)

Lily Report 25 Apr 2005 07:53

Can I join, please? I am due to go to my (once a month) Book Club at the Library today but find their choice of books not really to my taste. Yes, I am willing to try something new, but it HAS to grab my interest.........Just got the Which Guide to Making the most of Retirement out, could have written 50% myself!! Lily (happy in retirement)

Unknown Report 25 Apr 2005 12:09

Hi Lily Just read your comment about the retirement book. Someone once told me that those of us who read such books don't really need to. Those people who would benefit from reading them, don't read them. I hope that makes sense!! Dee x

Can I just say what a really great idea this is? Unfortunately, due to concentration problems, I can only read very lightweight trash at the moment, but I will certainly be following this thread. Mandy :)

Must just tell you - during the easter holidays our godson stayed.I'm always trying to get him to read, but no he was'nt having it - so we went to the library anyway and l showed him Northern Lights, he said it looked too complicated and that he's a very slow reader (he's 14yrs), so l suggested something he knew like Harry Potter, this he agreed too cause he knew the characters having seen all the films about 4 times. He's now reading book 2 and l'm about to send book 3. I'm so chuffed - he always said he's not interested in reading, but it was more the fact he was slow.l also said if your reading at home the length of time does'nt matter just enjoy it:o)))))) jude sarf wales - well chuffed:o)

Jude Have you come across the 'Fighting Fantasy' series by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone? They are game books. My son read them as a teenager and they seem to have had a revival recently as my friends 13 year old is in to them now. They may be something your godson would find intersting. There is a website www.fightingfantasygamebooks(.)com if you want to find out more Dee x

Jude, yes I think so, someone else mentioned the name change earlier on the thread. Not sure if I'll read a child called it, i've read the one that i think is a sequel by the child's brother, and excerpts of a child called it. Found it extremely sad so I'll have to see. Ann Glos

Shirley, Snow Falling on Cedar came up earlier on the thread, I looked it up on Amazon to see what it was about and it is now on my 'wish list'. One in my waiting to be read pile is The Binding Chair - Kathryn Harrison - described as 'The magical tale of a young orphan's adventures after she flees rural China for turn-of-the-century Shanghai' Must say this thread has given me several books to look out for, even if we don't actually choose to read them as a group. Dee x

I'd love to join your club Mike, but....I have 2 on the go just now, and I got so many for my birthday! I have read DAVE PELZER's books, so sad. Ragged trousered philanthropist, Lorna doone. I'll get around to the rest in my own time. If you are still at it in a couple of months.......can I still join? Deanna

Deanna, No problem! I haven't started Merry Christmas myself yet as in the middle of a Robert Ludlum thriller! I'm one of these though who always has a book on the go and not everyone is like that I realise now. GReadies if you think this is the wrong way to do it please feel free to say so. I just wanted to start something we could all read and then talk about I was naive not taking into account things like getting hold of books etc I certainly didn't want anyone to be out of pocket. Also have had a couple of emails saying the next book is too upsetting and to withdraw it?? I know, I read the review and its not my cup of tea but its not compulsory to read? I'm putting this very badly, as usual, what I'm trying to say is I just wanted to start a-- read a book and talk about it like you would a dvd? Please let me know how you'd like it continue? Nominations and votes or anything else? I won't be offended in fact I'll be relieved to get some input! lol

AnninGlos Report 25 Apr 2005 17:48

Mike, for those of us who don't want to read a child called it, or who have already read it, why don't you give us the next popular vote so we can read that instead, no reason why we can't be commenting on two books at once, especially as A child called it may be too upsetting for some to read. what will be the date for discussing the second book? Ann Glos

Unknown Report 25 Apr 2005 17:57

Ann, All the others had 2 votes each except for Cloud Mountain Jane Austen Book Club Both with 1 vote. So you see the dilemma? That is what I can't work out what to do?? Merry Christmas is reviewed 23rd May -- so the next book is not until 23rd June review but as you said you need 2 on the go??
