Sue in Somerset

Sue in Somerset Report 16 May 2005 23:00

I've stood on the banks of the frozen river Moskva outside Moscow and watched a wolf walk past a man who was fishing through a hole in the ice. I managed to do some research on the internet and found a new drug which I hoped would help my husband. He had been needing blood transfusions every two weeks and was not expected to survive a rare cancer. His doctor was enlightened enough to try the treatment and my husband hasn't needed a transfusion since. So I suppose I helped save my husband's life. I've just been randomly selected to take part in a European project. 5000 letters were sent out to people on the electoral roll and I decided to apply for the UK panel. I am going to be discussing the latest developments in Brain Science with 125 other European citizens in Brussels in 3 weeks time. All expenses paid! I've already had one meeting with the rest of the UK group in London.

Just remembered a few more. Passed A Level English with a grade A pass in my 30s, followed by A Level Law (although only grade E) also 3 O levels and a GCSE all in my 30s/40s (only passed two O levels at school). Short term Fostered 10 children. Visited wonderful places like the Ice fields in the Canadian Rockies, Niagara, Grand Canyon, Brice Canyon, Yosemate Yellowstone NP, New Orleans, Mesa Verde, Florence, Paris, Switzerland and many more. It has been fascinating reading all the things that you have all done. Here are a few of mine. Given birth to my two beautiful daughters. I was at the birth of one of my grandchildren. Worked as an Au pair in the 60`s and travelled around Sweden and Denmark. Also worked as a chambermaid in a large hotel in Copenhagen during a Danish Royal Wedding when the Hotel was used for the wedding guests. Hitchhiked around Europe in the 60`s for a few years. Lived for 10 years in Germany. Passed my first GCSE at the age of 50. Worked for 20 years in the NHS. And many more. Love and Peace Marianne. xxxx

LOL Dee - so have I (and Lakeside!) I was with my daughter when my grandson was born and held him even before she did :o) As someone else said, you have your own babies and think how wonderful, but nothing compares to being at the birth of someone elses - especially your own daughters. I also saw George Best play for Man U against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Boxing Day 1963 and thought he was the most gorgeous thing on 2 legs. We drove through a snowstorm to get there in my Grandad's old Ford Popular. It broke down and my Great Uncle had to come to get us to take us to the game. I drove a dumper truck with rear wheel steering and almost demolished the office and shop at a camping and caravanning club site before I learned to steer it properly! I was instrumental in making a VERY unpopular local councillor lose his seat at a local election. I was at the count - very exciting - probably one of the best times of my life. He was so sure he would win again and just to see his smug face change when the result was finally announced was worth all the door knocking and canvassing I had done. :o) Sue xx

Maz, all the other replies sound a bit like 'Boys own' adventures compared to mine! I have canoed down the Ardeche, arms like Twizzle at the end!! Been on stage with Sooty, covered by a sheet pretending to be a ghost. My son was really scared when I removed the sheet LOL Been in a blue light ambulance when I fell down three steps and broke my ankle very badly. The journey was awful, so much for the state of Kent's roads!! Sue
