Teresa In Canada | Report | 24 Jun 2005 18:33 |
I need your support guys. My husband Bob has just come home from the doctors and we have just found out that he has Leukemia. It was found after routine blood tests for a physical he had a couple of weeks ago. Apparently it is a slow form of Leukemia, I don't know what type and hubby can't remember. We now have to wait for a Drs appointment at the cancer centre to see what happens next. We will tell the kids tonight, that will be hard even though they are all adults. Bob is 53 and even though the doctor said that he has patients that have lived with this for 15 years with this it is not long enough for me. Please say a prayer for us today. Teresa in Calgary, Canada UPDATE: Appointment is booked for July 20 but have been put on the list for a sooner appointment if there is a cancellation. Thanks for your prayers and messages. |

Hi Teresa I am so sorry to hear about your hubby, you must be very worried. Before you panic too much about what the doctor said though I should wait and see what the cancer doctor has to say. I think your doctor was very thoughtless saying what he did. I'm sure that he thought it would make you feel better and was probably trying to tell you what a slow cancer it was. He also probably meant 15 years without any treatment. Your doctor also may not know about the latest treatments etc. He isn't the expert and hopefully when you do see the 'real' expert he will be able to explain more fully. Will be thinking about you and your family and hoping that things look brighter soon. Chrissie |

Teresa, what can I say to you? All that comes to mind is that miracles do happen and trust that your friends give you and your family the support that you will all need. I am sure that with the medical resources which are to hand today your husband will come through and you will have many years together. God bless you both. Ann |

Teresa, sending you a big hug. I know just what you are going through. Almost 6 years ago my husband Doug was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 53. He had gone to our doctor because he was feeling tired and run down and had some blood tests. When he went for the results he was told he had a blood disorder and an appointment was made at our local hospital. I wasn't able to go with him so our adult daughter went. The consultant just said 'This type of leukaemia affects many people over the age of 50 and most don't know they have it because any symptoms are put down to age'. This was the first time leukaemia had been mentioned and, like you, we were devastated. The type that Doug has (and Jeremy Beadle has just been diagnosed with) is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia or CLL and has one of the slowest rates of advancement. Doug goes for check ups every 3 to 4 months at the hospital, where his blood is tested and he is weighed. The consultant feels the glands in his armpits and his stomach for any enlargement of his liver or spleen. Once a year he has a full body scan for a more detailed examination of his organs. They also ask if he has had any persistant chest infections or colds, but are not worried by normal coughs and colds. He is not on any medication for his CLL and, apart from around the check up appointment, we tend to forget Doug has it. Doug's white blood cell count fluctuates occasionally, but mostly it's stable. If you need to talk, please e-mail me - through Genes first and we can privately mail if you like, or just talk on this thread. Love and hugs to you and Bob Sue & Doug xxxx |
