This essay intends to explore the variety of literary techniques and themes employed by the authors George Orwell and Margaret Atwood, as they develop the relationships of the central characters in their respective novels, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and The Handmaid’s Tale. By investigating each relationship in depth and through the use of juxtaposition, the overall message of each book will become apparent. Both texts portray a dystopian vision of the future; a future were the values of society have gone horribly wrong. Indeed, both authors are warning us, foreshadowing even, a time that lies ahead if certain aspects of today’s society are overlooked. However different the two novels seem, both present a stark warning that cannot be ignored. It is by examining the unorthodox relationship of George and Julia in Nineteen Eighty-Four, and the much more typical communion of Offred and Nick in The Handmaid’s Tale, that the overriding message of each novel shall become clear. O yeah!
