Hi Mandy Like you put loads of weight on -went from 7st. to 16st.,doctor told me it was hormones due to having a baby, kept going back and they give me the same old cherry. When i moved and joined a new surgery had to have a medical which included a blood test and with in days the new Doctor was on my doorstep -she asked how long had i been feeling unwell -told her for years and she told what it was-B----Y THYROID. Today i am having a bit of a bad time with it-hope to get it sorted. There are lots of things that go with a THYROID problem that we are not told about ie FOODS that we shouldn`t eat and other illnesses that it might trigger off. Was in the health food at the weekend and saw this book called the THYROID DIET,have read a bit and my eyes have already been opened. WHY OH WHY aren`t we told about these things. Keep eating the PEARS,LOL. Take Care. R.B. xxxx |

Have suffered from under active thyroid for 20+ years and have constant battle with weight problems. Until reading this thread I never realised that the illness is affected by food. On my next trip to UK I will certainly buy the Thyroid Diet book you have mentioned. Thanks |

Have just googled for some info and came up with this Dietary Recommendations for person with Hypothyroidism Include in your diet apricots, dates, egg yolk, molasses, parsley, potatoes, prunes, raw seeds, and whole grains. Eat fish or chicken and raw milk and cheese. Omit these foods entirely: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, mustard greens, peaches, pears, radishes, spinach, and turnips. These foods further suppress Thyroid functions. This says OMIT pears !!!! Think I´ll wait until I buy the book !! Out of interest does anyone take any natural thyroid supplements in addition (or instead of) Thyroxine ? |

Mine is underactive, discovered when i put on a lot of weight for no apparent reason. I was always 'skin and bones' and have gone down a bit, but no really happy with where i am ( although dont look fat, Just fatter than i was) Apparently one of the signs of still not being adequately balenced levels is a gravelly voice - anyone else have that? Ohhhh- i hate pears too!! Jess x |

Everyone keeps mistaking me for hubbie, pmsl. As for the weight- what a joke told me that i was on the right dosage this time last year- 11st and the weight is still going on. I am very frightened as there are heart problems in the family. R.B. xxx |

My thyroid was over-active but it was so bad i was given radio active iodine drink which took too much away and i am now under-active, i did put on weight but not too much, i think perhaps your doctor's are not bothering about your conditions, i would demand they take notice of what you are saying and get your dosage sorted out. very interesting about the foods to avoid, i was never told about that, will get the book that has been mentioned, thank you for that. I'm only 19 and I've had tiredness problems and 3 stone weight gain in 3 months. The doc said it's probably an Underactive thyroid problem yet I haven't had blood tests or anything yet. I suppose I ought to get it sorted before it gets too bad. I've been having real problems moving the weight it's getting me low being this big and I can't handle much more. Stacey |

Hi Tracy At the moment I have an underctive Thyroid but in the past mine seems to fluctuate from underactive to overactive. The Doctor spent months trying to get mine level with different dosages of Thyroxine. I now have a 50 microgram tablet one day and a 100 microgram tablet the next day. At the moment it is stable. But I forgot to take my table one day and by lunch time I was feeling so down. So make sure you take the medication they prescribe for you. It's a kind of ritual now with me pick up the coffee cup and the Tyroxine lol. I have to have a blood test every 12 weeks to make sure it does not change because of it flutuating. I still get tired quick but then I put that down to age mainly. At least my doctor keeps an eye on it on a regular basis. I didn't even know I had a Thyroid problem. I went to doctor with something entirely different and he said we will do some tests and that's how I found out. I have put on a little weight but nothing drastic. Hope all goes well for you Tracy Regards Jackie |
