Fred ...Do you mean connie onnie butties?? I loved them but that was before anyone knew about cholesterol. I used to make my Grandads 'carry out' and we mixed tea leaves with the Connie onnie and he added the water to make a brew while at work! I loved the connie onnie when it went hard around the edge of the tin. Also loved a good dripping crust with loads of salt. Now I feel sad at all the past goodies that are no longer allowed. Oh Fred, It wasn't the scouse pan...it was the pea soup pan that you added to. Any scrap vegies old bones etc., it did taste good though. lol. Funny but I have just made a big pan of scouse for tomorrow...it's always better the next day. Beryl x |

HISTORY OF SCOUSE-courtesy of young Daniel Scouse was brought to Liverpool by Northern European sailors, it was originally called Labskause. This was finally shortened to Skause and over time the spelling changed to the more Anglicised version we have today, Scouse. The people who ate Scouse were all generally sailors and their families and eventually all sailors within Liverpool were referred to as Scousers. Time has now taken its turn and everyone from the region of Liverpool is known as a Scouser. Scouse holds a place in the heart of most Liverpudlian's as the taste of their hometown and is still regulary eaten today by a great number of families. There are records showing that it was also served to the inmates of the Birkenhead workshouse way back in 1864. The recipe was much simpler then than today's refined version but was predominatly the same staple ingredients - meat, vegatables and potatoes. Looks like I've been cooking scouse for years under the guise of lamb stew. lol!! |
