Lunar, There are all sorts of halls and conference centres in London that would be suitable, but the point of this event being held more centrally was that those in the North and Scotland wouldn't have to travel so far. Geographical location is far less important than good transport links, and as Sue so rightly pointed out, you can't please everyone. As far as I can make out most of the GR members who post on this Board live further north than London, and booking accommodation is more expensive in London, so is booking a venue. It would cost far more to hold the event in London. CB >|<

At the risk od being linched......Carlise would be the centre of the UK if you take into account the islands to the north of mainland Scotland (Shetland Islands). With out the Shetland Islands the centre would be roughly the Isle of Man. For a UK meet a Capital meet would probally be easier to get to as most public transport links run to London and many parts of GB can get there for as little as £1.50 (Megabus / Megatrain from stagecoach). Most large fayres use the Olympia exhibition centre in Kensington, however itse a pain in the a*se to get to by tube of they ring infrequently unless there is a big event. On the plus side there are a number of Hotels near by. http://www.londontown.*com/NearBy/LondonInformation/Entertainment/Olympia/7d9a/ It would be nice to have a global meet but we may need to wait until space travel becomes more accessable and Hotels open up on the moon or Mars (yes it is a pipe dream but who knows what will happen in the next 50 years or so? and howmany of us will still be here on GR) LT p.s. You could speek to GR through the contat us thingy under advertising or similar as it would be publisity for them.

I think that as well as the owners of the premises having public liability insurance, the person or commitee running an event such as this would also have to carry public liability insurance. If it was held in some places i think you would also need the permission of the police and the fire service. This would need to be checked out with the local authority

It would be great if we could have some feedback on dates that would be good for most. I'll take emails and BB will. Heather

I don't know Paul, if you rent out a place for a wedding etc, the owners of the building have to have licences in place before they can rent out, the bigger venues would certainly have performing licences and insurance.

the fee's for the legalities and licences required for an event as big as that plus all the rest involved would be astronomical and well out of reach of anyone on theses board unless we have one or two lottery winners big winners at that LOL Paul

Julie, Given how crowded it was at last year's Family History Fair held by the Society of Genealogists in London, I should think the event Baby Butterfly suggested would attract a lot of people. We had to queue the length of the street to get in, and the place was packed from start to finish. I think it matters more that the location has a suitably large venue, with plenty of accommodation and as many transport links as possible than picking somewhere because it's geographically central. It's inevitable that some participants will have to travel further than others, but if it takes off and becomes an annual event, the location could probably be swapped around, so that everyone gets a turn at having it near them. GR have a PR section, so they should be able to sort something out, if they're willing to 'play ball'. CB >|<

Well I think its a wonderful idea....baby butterfly..... good thinking Camberwell Beauty about the NEC and involving GR, lets make it familt history type weekend with trade type stands. Everyone would find there own accomodation and travel arrangements if neccessary, thus working within their own budget. We need to think of and contact someone who would benefit from the PR the event would generate. julie x
