Hello Jackie I moved to Forest Gate from Romford in the mid 1980's. Still own my flat there but now getting it ready to sell after moving to Suffolk 6 years ago. I was amazed how much Stratford had changed. Remember the pyramid building? I worked in there! Both my sons were born in Newham General Hosp - within the sound of Upton Park! Lots of my ancestors are turning out to have been from the East End too - Stepney - Mile End - Poplar, but I've got posher ones from Hammersmith and Battersea.;O) Regards Trudi

Yes Jackie, I'm in Felixstowe so I'm about 8 miles from Ipswich! None of my relatives are from this area (at least not the ones I've found) but if you need any info locally just point me in the general direction and I'll try to help. I love to solve mysteries! Good wishes Trudi

Jackie, we could have waved at each other across the river. I loved those old carts made out of wooden boxes and pram wheels and did you put bottle tops along the front for decoration? Gawd, I wish I could go back and know now .......................... Wonderful days, wonderful people - we were very lucky. And honest guys, all the doors were left unlocked and you would wander from house to house down the road and everyone was called Uncle and Auntie. Jacqui, did your mum con you that you were actually 'at the seaside' when you had sandwiches sitting under Tower Bridge when the tide was out? It was years later before my sis told me mum just took us to the Thames bank for our 'holiday'.

Jackie

Jackie Report 25 Apr 2006 14:17

yes heather, coloured tops on top. , no never went seaside not so lucky, but big doorstep of bread an dripping, or jam or sugar on, bottle of micky of the milkman,as we called it/ ans so true, to go leave ya door open. and everyone trusted everyone, the good old days'now you lock up and treble check
