Another theory Steve..........and there are many! lol One explanation is that it was established during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. The Jacobites declared that the natives of Newcastle were staunch supporters of the Hanoverian Kings, in particular of George II during the 1745 rebellion. This contrasted with rural Northumbria, which largely supported the Jacobite cause. If true, the term may have derived from a popular anti-Hanoverian song, which calls the first Hanoverian king 'Geordie Whelps', meaning 'George the Guelph'. Mau ;0) |

Anne do somersaults on the mat if you like, like! lol Tor My brother was born in Preston Hospital. It's long gone now though, pulled down and now has houses built there. It was an old building but everywhere seems to be getting pulled down!! It's a very old town with lots of history. Lots from my past gone. I live in Whitley Bay,massive regeneration project there as well (at least when council pull their finger out.) Still have our beautiful coastline! Mau xx |

Just come on here and love your thread Anne. Of course Geordie men have the sexiest accents,I know as I have my own lovely man here in the North East. Don't believe what you hear about them being like Andy capp either, all the men in our family pull their weight as far as helping in the home! Just don't call us MACKEMS please lol they are Sunderland folk! ( mackem and tackem was to do with making then taking! ) What part of North Shields did you come from TOR? I lived there when I was young, all my ancestors worked from the quayside and fished the North Sea. Geordies mostly support Newcastle United, Haway the Lads and Mackems ahem Sunderland. I'm proud to be a Northumbrian me like!! If you smoked ciggies Anne I would say to you ' Noo divint drop ya doddle on thu proggy mat, there's a canny lass! Yer makin' it arl clarty, but ya can cowp ya creels if ya like like' Mau (xx) |
