Is it just me or are Motorways getting worse? Sitting in a bus stop in Livingston now waiting on Mr Owl dropping off the HGV and bringing the car round. We did the usual trunking run Livingston to Rochdale and back last night and the M6 was absolutely awful bouncing up and down along most of the road. By comparison the A406 Livingston to Linlithgow road despite being used by a large number of HGVs and tractors as well as cars was really smooth.

Are motorways just all in desperate need of repairs?

Probably

I wonder if it is because HGVs are seeming to be getting larger and heavier and the materials used for roads can't cope?

Our nearest motorway - M20- takes quite a battering, as much of the continental traffic comes through the Channel ports and via the Tunnel.
I can't tell you of the present road surface condition though, as I don't drive and don't often travel on the motorway.

The surface which I don't like is the one where it is in segments with ridged concrete-like top surface separated by a black narrow band of what looks like pitch.
It's just so noisy :-|

Sadly, I don’t think there’s enough money in the coffers to repair/resurface the roads.

I think you're right as far as motorways are concerned.

I was watching an episode of Motorway Cops some time ago and there had been an accident where the car had hit the central barrier and then skidded along the road for some distance, making a mess of the road surface.

The policeman investigating the accident commented that repairing the surface would cost £1,000 per metre.
