There is an article in the Telegraph today saying that it is wrong to charge people to view 'something that was created as a national collective resource and not a private commodity'. FMP have said that they have invested millions to conserve, scan, transcribe and publish this important national collection, receiving no public funds for this work and are not guaranteed to recover its costs.
Some academics are calling for a campaign for a change to the census digitisation process.

There will always be transcription errors – even the National Archives don't expect 100% accuracy. However, you can’t report transcription errors unless you purchase the transcript, and most experienced family historians aren't going to do that because the image and the associated documents are more informative.

I suspect this is something we're going to have to live with until the census is included in a subscription.

The free 1921 search is linked to the transcription. I've asked FMP how I report an error in the transcription without having to purchase it and pay an additional sum. I've always found that the transcription is only as good as the transcriber and given the choice would always purchase the image :-0

I certainly would always get the original rather than a transcription.
Even on previous censuses I frequently come across unnotified errors and add a correction.

In the special edition issue of the Lost Cousins newsletter dealing with the release of the 1921 census there was a suggestion that you do not download the transcription but download the original page.

I did that and noticed that although my mother's name was correct on the census it had been incorrectly shown on the transcription

Thank you Island, that's what I saw.

But after reading all the comments on here it sounds as if even with a sub to FMP the 1921 Census is not what it should be. I'll bide my time I think but in the meantime many thanks to everyone on here who has, and continues to contribute on the matter. I will keep following the topic.

Maddie, I downloaded my grandparents image and successfully uploaded it onto my Ancestry Tree. In Gallery on your Ancestry Tree you need to click on 'Upload Photos' NOT 'Upload Story". You'll then see that JPG files are supported on Upload Photos....hope this helps :-)

I agree about the transcription being very poor. It took me ages to find my father and his parents.....only the last two letters of their surname were correct! It was only because I already had a lot of info on them that I eventually found them which rather defeats the object :-|

I was being facetious on account of FMP charging for something that isn't fit for purpose.

The GBC_1921_RG15_08975_0169.jpg file isn't an allowed type. The allowed types are: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .txt

I agree with the poor transcription. I had a record where the birthplace was transcribed as Cowbridge, Glamorganshire, on the image it was quite clearly Coatbridge SCOTLAND. :-(

I'm not impressed either Susie. I'm glad I don't actually need 1921 info, just looking out of interest. Had a devils own job trying to find three different families because the spellings were ridiculous. I'm blowed if I'm going to pay to correct their errors.

I thought it was a bit much for FMP to charge for each look up as people were already paying for a subscription.- they said it was to cover the high cost of transcription. Needs must however so I've just done my first look up and was very disappointed with the standard of the transcription.
It was a family of 4 and there were 5 errors - information being attributed to the wrong person, very poor job descriptions and errors of place names.
Of course they know we have no choice if we want to find out details of our families, but I'm not too impressed so far.

You don’t need a sub. Everyone has to pay for the download, it is just that those with a sub get a discount. So it might be cheaper to pay just for your downloads.
You can do a very very basic search for free. By hovering you can get the names of some of the others in the household.
