I’ve not looked to see whether there are one or two meters as ours are housed outside but I would expect there to only be one. There is only one “device” in the house which registers gas and electricity. |

May I ask whether, if you are dual fuel, only one smart meter is fitted? |

July 2019 A British Gas chap came to service our boiler and wanted to arrange to instal a smart meter. We were happy to have one but I told the chap that I would only accept a second generation meter (SMETS2). This man, a British Gas engineer, had no idea what I was talking about and had to check with his boss, which didn’t inspire much confidence. We went ahead on the basis that they would fit a second generation meter. |

I presume, by 'phone protocols', you don't mean phone signals. |

Re:Inky's last paragraph..reminds me of our wartime 50 year old houses in London dockland 3 up 3 down as separate dwellings, downstairs had a scullery with copper boiler...each room had a light bulb, and the "living" room also had a 5 amp socket. |

We don't change supplier and have gas delivered we have energy saving bulbs so no need for a smart meter and won't have one anyway. |

We had a smart meter installed by one supplier but after we changed to another, better tariff, it didn't work. The meter stood on the worktop in the kitchen, the light changing from green to amber to red according to consumption. We found it useful as it made us think about what appliances, lights etc were turned on. It was up to us to turn off any excess consumption or be prepared to pay the bill. |

Per RtR's link: Yes, the SMETS1 meters do stop working. |

Me too ZZzzz. They may help a few to keep a check on costs that didn't bother otherwise, but they use that fact as their sales pitch to persuade people to have them. Most of the benefit is to themselves! |

Annx, I'm far to cynical and maybe a little to old to believe that we are going to benefit in anyway from such things, it is like (un) affordable housing and more like to meet government targets than anything else. |

ZZzzz Correct! The smart meters save the company having to employ and pay meter readers. It also saves them the employer's share of national insurance they have to pay on those wages. It means they get accurate readings which means less cost in pursuing debts owed by those who don't pay, or give incorrect readings. They can take action as soon as things start to slide. I don't have one and won't have one till I have to. |

We have no intention of having a smart meter, the only thing we see it doing is making staff redundant just like self check out in supermarkets and we don't mind sending it ourselves as long as it means we don't have an unsmart meter. |

Ron2 I agree with you. I have been asked by SSE a few times and my reply was,"but it wont actually save me money will it? Will it reduce my bill? "No," they said it will just tell you what you are using. But I know exactly what im using and if the tumble dryer is on, of course my meter is going faster but I still need to use the appliance. |

We've had a smart meter for some years for a dual account with NPower (Now taken over by another mob). Never had a problem. Only use we can find for it is to see wot gas/elec we use daily. Cant really see point of em. If I've got main elec oven on then have washer on and also kettle it would indicate high usage but, so wot. I'd have the 3 things on because they needed at that time and I wouldnt turn owt off |
