I was only 4 when my paternal grandfather died but I never saw a book in my grandparents houses. My dad was the one for books he was atypical of his family but he was the cleverest by a long way. |

Pat, I was lucky, County Records have some land documents, and some wills and land documents are kept in the university library. |

My parents and the set of grandparents who were still alive when I was young were all keen readers. I have a couple of my Gran's books and the book Dad was reading when he died - The Battle for Crete (I think it's called). He was there cos he left photos albums behind containing lits of photos of that time. :-D |

I won a few comps in school for my essays....maybe I inherited something from him, my dad was a good story teller and avid reader. I can not remember my mum ever reading a book....she was the mathematics queen like my brother |

What I have started to do is type out the various stories that grandparents and parents have told me so they aren't forgotten - even about a great-grandfather who got a gammy leg due to an accident at sea and especially about how all of the children in one side of my family were left equal shares in the family farm rather than leaving it to the eldest son - which happened twice and is in the copies of their wills but I doubt whether my kids eill read theough them to find that out. I have pointed out that the first ancestor to do that was the original women's libber. :-) |
