In the current situation, the best one would be fencing.

You wear a mask

You wear gloves

If anyone gets within 6ft of you - you stab them! :-D

An épée is 90cm long, somewhat short of 6 feet / 190cm .
It is a far from ideal weapon for stabbing for which daggers are more practical and of course somewhat easier to conceal.
Waving around even a 90cm épée in the queue is certain to attract attention. Touché

Fencing was part of my school curriculum. It looks easy but is anything but plus you need to be both extremely fit and very quick to get anywhere with it. If you want to give it a try give Club Escrime in Winchester a ring. They have all the gear for people of all ages, M&F.

RTR, It was a joke. Not an opportunity for you regale us with your apparent childhood, nor to try and 'educate' anyone.

But while you're on the subject of advising me about where to go fencing, may I refer you to a couple of friends of mine,
Pim - sorry that's what his friends call him, Piermarco Terminiello, and his wife, Fran.
They study - and teach, HEMA - Historical European martial arts.

and one of his many books:

Fran:

So, to be honest, if I wanted 'educating' on various swords and their uses through the ages - and there are many different sizes and shapes (as opposed to epees used in your school), and how to use them, I know where I'd go!

Oh yes, and Pim doesn't 'mansplain'. :-D

I thought your OP would involve me getting out my hammer and nails ;-) :-D :-D. Mind you now I can think of a good use for my lump hammer :-D :-D :-D

I wonder where you'd hold a hammer to achieve the best spinning throw? :-D

I wonder if Rollo was using a child’s sword. An adult one can be up to about 114 cms.

Sharron Report 5 Aug 2020 15:40

Wiki got it wrong again?

They do teach agriculture at approved schools don't they? That would involve fencing!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 5 Aug 2020 15:56

My brother learnt plumbing at approved school, not fencing.
They do fencing at Sparsholt (Agricultural College)

There are approved schools and approved schools though aren't there?

You should know!

Maybe I meant remedial.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 5 Aug 2020 16:05

Many schools are approved............by someone ;-)

Rollo was concerned Maggie would be waving her sword around in queues - that’s where ye olde sword stick comes in handy

maggiewinchester Report 5 Aug 2020 16:11

Sharron, I could take offence at your implication that I should know about approved schools, but, I won't :-D :-D :-D I know what you mean :-D

Nameslessone, perhaps RTR was concerned - I mean it's much easier to hide a dagger than a sword in your handbag, isn't it?
